Lincoln Won't Be Selling Another Pickup Anytime Soon

One might think that a luxurious Lincoln pickup would be appealing in today's market, but Lincoln doesn't apparently think so.

No Repeat

In the past, Lincoln has made not just one, but two Ford F-150 based pickups - the Blackwood and the Mark LT. Now that the automaker has ditched cars for crossovers and SUVs, it would make perfect sense to do it again. However, that doesn't appear to be in the cards for the luxury brand, according to a recent report from Ford Authority.

Shot Down

"No, no pickup plans for Lincoln. We're very focused on Lincoln SUVs, which are doing great," Kumar Galhotra, Ford Vice President and President of the North American region, told Ford Authority.

Lap of Luxury

Thus, those looking for luxury pickups must stick with the Ford F-150, which offers some very nice trim levels in the Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. A large percentage of buyers flock to those leather laden trims, which makes one wonder if they'd do the same if there was a Lincoln badge on the grille.

One Year Wonder

Lincoln is likely very wary of its past experience with pickups, which is a very mixed bag. The Blackwood came along in 2002, but the automaker moved a mere 3,356 units before discontinuing the quirky revised F-150 and giving up on the pickup idea for a few years.

On Ice

Then there was the Mark LT, which was more of a rebadged F-150 than the Blackwood. Lincoln rolled it out in 2006 to reasonable success, selling 10,274 units in its first model year. However, those numbers quickly dipped and the Mark LT was put on ice after the 2008 model year as well.

Ahead of Their Time

These two failures would seem to be enough evidence for Lincoln to just give up on the pickup idea, but we must consider the fact that both the Blackwood and Mark LT were way ahead of their time. Buyers didn't start flocking to luxurious pickups until recently, and now it seems like there's no turning back.

Room at the Top

As such, we'd argue that a high-end Lincoln pickup would be a success in today's market. Just look at the Navigator for proof, which is using its handsome styling and supremely comfortable interior to make Lincoln a tidy profit. In this luxury truck-obsessed world, such a place exists for a new range-topping model. Too bad Lincoln won't be the ones to build it.
