It was a joke.

"On both jugs the seal was partially open- crinkled up seal."

I have 2.5 gallon jugs of Rotella T6 stored laying on their sides (because they are too tall to fit standing up).

They have been that way for at least a year, maybe a year and a half. A local automotive parts store was closing, and I bought all the T6 they had for 75% off.

I never even looked at the seals to the jugs... but there is no oil leaking out of them, even under the pressure of 2.5 gallons of fluid pressing against them.

FYI, up to $40 rebates on Rotella now, go to the shell website.

And this time amazon or walmart online purchases are excluded.

That reminds me... I need to check on the one I submitted a few weeks ago!

Well... that's a bummer... for whatever reason they denied mine and it was marked as invalid. Not sure why... I purchased the case from Sam's Club and then took a screenshot of the order and the delivery confirmation from FedEx, so all documentation was correct. I just tried to submit it again and it won't let me since I have now met my max for this rebate. That's a bummer...

I just received my 2-pack of T6 in 2.5 gallon jugs from Walmart. The jugs came in a sealed Rotella carton, free delivery, for $112 +tax. You have to scroll down on the website, since they have different prices for the same items, some with shipping, some without. Delivery showed up at 8:45, Monday night, from a courier service.

I have an old, 2 quart, Tupperware measuring cup that I use for oil changes. Easier than pouring out of a jug, plus I can easily measure for the odd number of quarts

This habitrail rigmarole routine represents precisely why I avoid rebates.

I hate rebates. Menards has 11% rebates, so you buy a bunch of stuff, pay taxes on the full amount, then submit the rebate, one for each purchase, then 6 weeks later you get a postcard with a barcode and can only use it for more purchases at Menards, and pay tax on it again.

Order it off Walmart never had an issues, factory jugs both gallon & 2 1/2 gal in Rotella box inside a Walmart box never a leak or bad seal. If I need it in a hurry I go to Autozone and they match Walmart price.

Man, you'll have to show us that one.
I've never seen shell rotella in a 5qt jug.

To the OP, I know amazon sells a lot of stuff that they buy in bulk from china/india and package themselves for resale in unmarked packaging, but have never seen real rotella oil come in anything but actual shell labeled jugs and boxes, I sure would be wary of that oil they sent you.

You know what, maybe it wasn't the T6 I'd buy in the 1.25 gallon jugs. Maybe that was the Motorcraft stuff - it's been a WHILE since I've bought either. Either way, one of them came in 1.25 gallon jugs and it was great because I'd just buy 3 of them to get 15 quarts, otherwise I had to buy 4 jugs to get 15 quarts and have a quart left over.

And for us 11-22 6.7l owners, neither is ideal since it takes 13 quarts.

Update: I got the one replacement jug from Amazon. It was in an Amazon box and had paper around it. Completely different from the other two. Also this one had an intact seal. Based on this I am returning the other jug as well and will not be buying 2.5 gal from Amazon anymore.

I did check my 5 gallon pail and seal was intact as was the two 1 gal jugs- all from Amazon.
I bet money some jerk- either an Amazon customer or shady supplier switched out the oil.

I did email Shell when this happened but haven't gotten a reply............

As far as rebates go they are always only good at Tractor Supply, NAPA, Autozone etc. Even with the rebates Amazon is cheaper. Walmart used to be fairly competitive but lately they are pretty high. $23 gallon last time I looked.

So the one that you just got as a replacement, was it in a Rotella jug? If not, I still wouldn't use it, even with an intact seal.

Also, I bought 3 gallons from Sam's Club, which is on the list for the rebates, for $73 after s&h. If they actually give me the $40 rebate that this purchase qualifies for, that would make 3 gallons $33, which is by far the cheapest I have bought any T6. I contacted the rebate center to inquire as to why mine was deemed invalid. They stated that the photo I sent was really small and when they tried to zoom in they couldn't read it. So I sent yet another, uncompressed or reduced size file of the purchase receipt... I'll see what they say.

All three jugs were real Rotella jugs. It's just that two appear to be open and we're in plastic bags. And none of the boxes said the shell or Rotella on them

To me that's not unusual, plain boxes that is. But, it is better to be safe than sorry. Ive only ordered Rotella T6 twice, maybe 3 times, from Amazon and Home Depot, each time they were gallon sizes and in regular (non Rotella branded) shipping boxes. The plastic bags I find to be fairly common when shipping liquids. And my only experience with 2.5g jugs was as described previously, had to pick through the stock on the shelf at Tractor Supply to find jugs that were not leaking. The leakers had loose seals.

1olddogtwo 05-01-2024 09:41 PM

I usually buy two at a time, mine never come boxes or wrapped in plastic.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Plus they are on sale with 5% off today.
