Apologies for jumpin in here but I am interested in one of my first mods being exhaust changes also, and not breaking the bank. For me the goal is more flow for power, lower egts, and enhancing the sound of the turbo moreso than the rumble out the tailpipe. But I haven't seen a thread that covered it for me. Do you guys have any suggestions on getting that out of the exhaust changes?

Ok a full delete is a very cost effecive way to achive what you want.
I went to an associates exhaust shop to order in a 4" . I was told not to waste my $ but to gut the current 3.5" system and I would get a very similar results as a 4" with muffler and Cat.
Better spool up, lower egt's, turbo whistle, and barks like a mad dog when I put the hammer down.
And it was an $80 mod to boot.

That sounds Great, but......it doesn't get very loud out the tailpipe with everything deleted????? And, is there still enough back pressure to keep torque and response high?

A dodge passes my house everyday and it sounds like a garbage truck with everything deleted.

I hope that I am not off base here, but can anybody say if they have seen any mileage gains with just a cat delete when they put on an after market exhaust sys.?
Thanks.

Much louder, Idle is close as you only hear the turbo whine and rushing air.
I can hear it start from about 300 ft with a good rumble till the turbo starts to spool. Plus if I am pulling a trailer and pass you, you will remember it as the concusion as I pass you it will pound hard.

6 cyl vs 8 cyl is a very different sound,

noted an improvement in throttle responce, the less back pressure the better for the turbo. Back pressure is used for aux braking remember.

My goal was to reduce EGT's, the solution was provided by my Muffler guy. Who knows his craft very well. And is very well know for full custom tuned exhaust systems. ( his goal on tuning a gas exhaust is for it to make smoke rings at idle).

if you want it quieter leave the cat in.

You said if I want it queter to leave the cat in. Why not leave the muffler in and take out the cat? Is taking one away better? Can you just take the cat away and get more flow and lower EGT's?

If you want better breathing but want it quite as can be go to a bigger exhaust. or get new 2011 or a used d-max.
If you want to save a few bucks and like a good powerful exhaust hollow it out.

If your not sure, go to your local shop and have a chunk of pipe welded in place. You'll only be out 80 bucks or so and you will know if you like it or not. If not spend hundreds on an aftermarket 4 or 5". Youll be out 80 but, you might save hundreds also.

Man, a person spends 80 taking the family out for supper. So eat in one night and get a pipe and you will know for sure.

I appreciate jetact jumpin in and askin the ? because I was wondering myself if there was a reason to delete the muffler, but keep the cat. I guess for emmisions reasons it would be the better thing to do......if you were in an area that inspected for such things. Issue basically is bang for the buck. $80 is great if there isn't an appreciable amount of difference in power between a $600 turbo back system vs. cat/muff deletes. So it isn't totally about money as much as it is return on investment. Thanks very much for the input.

It wasnt a money question. it was a question as to what is better to delete. Can I take away the cat and everything will be fine and leave the muffler. Is the car restricting flow or is it the muffler. Sorry to be a bother. I will just order a bigger exhaust as I dont want to run straight pipe.

So i've decided to go a different route. Im just going to have a shop make a pipe to go on the end of the extension pipe and turn out ahead of the rear wheel.

I've also decided to put the cat back on to cut down the vacuum cleaner sound and the fumes smell- The truck gets parked right next to my neigbors house and I warm it up whenever i go anywhere

so both pipes are for sale, its this:
03-07+ Ford 6.0L Powerstroke Diesel Cat Delete Pipe

has about 5hrs of use

and this:
Ford 6L Powerstroke Diesel Stock Muffler Delete Pipe

with clamps

$100 (firm)takes them both. Add shipping from 21409 if out of town, can do paypal. Would prefere to sell local and can meet anyone in the Annapolis, Eastern Shore area of Maryland.

PM me if interested. I will post in the for sale section also

Keep in mind muffler delete was short for me (2005 CC F250, 11/04 build, see original post), if you read the product reviews on purediesel power seems like some people have issues w/ length and some dont- I called them and they suggested I make an adapter piece to compensate- just FYI

I wanted to do a turn out in front of the wheel no muffler .
The custom shop I used said “first diesel huh, YOU ARE not going to like what it does to your wheel or ears!”
<O</O
I went with a 4” turbo back exit behind the wheel, kept the cat but went with a freer flowing muffler, we spend too much time towing.

Can anyone suggest a good free flowing muffler they have experience with? More flow without a ton more sound?
