How much "lift" do I have?

How much "lift" do I have?
OK, I kinda have an interesting situation here... when my dad had the truck, he added stiffer springs to increase payload capacity so it sits quite a bit higher than stock. But, they didn't state the amount of lift they provided when dad bought the springs. So, I was wondering if all you "stockers" out there could tell me what the distance from the top of your fender wells to the centers of your hubs is on both the front AND the back of your trucks? I have a 4x4 so please only post if you have a 4x4... I also have the 4" blocks on mine. I don't know if that's just what the e99's came with, or my dad added them. The reason I wanna know this is if I have more height in the front than stock, I can't just go and get one of those lift hanger and shackle kits to level the truck... the angles on the front axle won't work. Plus, due to dad removing the track bar, the springs sway a bit and have spread the clips apart a little. It's funny... as I turn my wheels, I'll hear a series of 2 to 3 thuds as everything shifts from one side to the other. This is not while REALLY driving, just when I'm yanking the truck over in parking lots and such. I'm thinking on getting some new lift springs for the front. Even though the truck rides like a rock, I might keep the stiff springs in the back. If I can afford air bags for the rear, I may do that, but until then it's gonna be what it is. The truck is about 3.5" higher in the rear than the front and I would like to get the truck within an inch lower in the front than the rear... so, if you "stockers" could post your measurements, that'd be great! That way, I can figure out how much "lift" I have and I can order new front springs accordingly. If I was confusing, please tell me and I'll do my best to clarify... Thanks Guys!

If you have the 4" blocks in the rear with the addition of stiffer springs or maybe an add-a-leaf on your 250 and the rear is that much higher i would say your front is probably pretty close to stock. Having the diesel will make the front that much lower.
You could go back to the 2" blocks if you have stiffer springs in the rear.
Do yourself a "BIG" favor, Re-install the track bar.

No front track bar is an accident waiting to happen, the lateral forces in a turn with all the wieght on the front are huge. Thats why the track bar is there, they make longer and thicker track bars for lifted trucks. When you lift the front, some of the manufacturers offer the new track bar as part of the lift, for your own safety and the safety of others on the road, put the track bar back on. My 350 was lifted the same way as your truck, and it does make for a stiffer ride, but I bought it that way. If I had done it myself I probably would look into some Skyjacker front springs, in their soft ride series, they make an adjustable track bar also.

I would, guys... I understand that it's not a good idea. I got the general gist of it as soon as I started reading on here. But, I don't know where it is and neither does my dad. That's why I was wondering what the measurements on your stock 4x4's are so I can either get springs with a track bar and bracket, or figure out what track bar bracket I'd need to order if my dad ever found the track bar. I think that would take that little bit of slop out of my steering too... so, if you guys could spare the time, the measurements on your stock 4x4 250's and 350's would be much appreciated.
On a different note, I have noticed that I kinda got used to the stiffer ride. Whenever I get into something smoother, I really don't know what to do with it. For me, it feels mushy and unstable... anybody else with me?

BTW, Dave... I REALLY like your profile picture! Sweet car... I always like that body style. I always wanted a '65 or so Galaxy or Fairlane convertible in light yellow with a black interior, small block V8, and a 4spd.
Thanks for the posts guys... believe me, I understand what you're saying. I'll do something about it as soon as I can. Right now, all I do is run a short 5min jaunt to work twice a day (to work in the morning, home for lunch, then back again until 5).

Jon,
I don't think giving you my measurement would be accurate enough to judge if you have bigger springs etc..
I believe your 99 and my 06 have a bit different wheel well design as well as you have leafs and i have coils.
Maybe you could post your measurements and others with a 99-04 could give you a better guess at what you have. From your picture it almost looks like your body is raised and not the suspension in refrence to the steering stabilizer looking quite low with respect to the ground but maybe it's just the picture i dont know.
I am sure the instability is due to the lack of the Track bar. You can purchase a OEM bar and get a Track bar "Drop bracket" for it. They usually cover a lift range and a few of the lift manufacturers sell them. You can also buy a "Adjustable track bar" that would probably be more cost effective than buying a OEM bar and the bracket.
Thanks for the comments on the Fairlane. It's due for new paint shortly. It's a rust free S.Carolina car that I have had for 28 yrs. One of these days ill get the rest of my pictures in my album.

Dave, that's what I was hoping for... if someone with as close to a '99 could post their stock measurements so I could compare them to mine, that'd help me determine approximately how much these springs have lifted my truck. Also, if they could state whether or not their 250 has the 4" blocks, that'd be very helpful as well. That picture doesn't help much... it's sitting in tall grass. Check out my Picasa link in my signature... all I wanna do is level my truck and keep my rear springs. Since my front springs are shot due to no track bar, I wanna figure out how much lift I'll need for the front springs. I'm guessing it'll be between 4" to 6".

the '99s (at least the early '99s) came with a 4" block. here is a pic of my e99 bone stock:
and after a 4" lift:
and then with an additional 1.5" front lift shackle:
judging by your picture, 2" up front would get you close to level.
what do you mean exactly? i run just the lift shackle (with stock hanger) along with my 4" springs and it has been fine for 3 years now. my caster angle is within spec, and i don't get any vibrations from the joint angle between the shaft and pinion.

That's what I was talking about. I don't know if the caster angle will line up. If I have a "lift" already and then go and get lift shackles and hangers, I'm wondering if that'll screw stuff up? And, judging from your pictures, I'm pretty sure I have something similar to 4" of lift. I might be able to reshape the clips on my front leafs... but then again, I wouldn't know what sized track bar bracket to order because I don't know how much lift I have. I'll go out and measure my distances between hubs and fenders and then I'll compare them to whatever y'all might be willing post! Hopefully, I'll be able to post them tomorrow... maybe I can find my track bar tomorrow. That'd be nice!

OK, I finally got some approximate measurements. The reason I say "approximate" is because my axles may not be level with each other since my driveway is gravel. Anyways, here's what the distance from the center of my hubs to the top of the fender:
Front: 26" to 27"
Back: 29" to 30"
What are the measurements on you guys' stock trucks? Please state whether your truck has the 3" or 4" blocks. Mine's an e99 and I think it had 4" blocks, right? Anyways, POST UP!!!

Jon,
According to your measurement your worse case is 4" and your minimum is 2" difference aprox. First, to get a better measurement put it out on the street where the terrain is more level and just measure from the ground to your wheel well. This is for refrence only and gives you a more of a platform to measure from. Lift the front to where you need it purchase a adj bar. not a bracket. It will adjust to where you need it. Then take the truck to be aligned which you will have to do anyway, regardless
