Missing Check Engine Light

I have a 1997 Expedition and recently noticed that when I turn on the ignition, every warning light on the dash comes on but the check engine light. I'm wondering if the previous owner cut a wire or something to disable the light. I've checked the fuse panel and it looks like all the lights are on the same fuse. Does anyone know which wires to check, or have any other ideas about why the CEL isn't turning on?

Maybe just a bulb is bad.

You're right, it could be a bad bulb, especially if it was on for a long time and burned out. I'm hoping its not though, every time I've opened up a dashboard it was a real pain to get all the trim off.

Go to Autozone and get the vehicle scanned. The scanner will tell you if the light is supposed to be on or not.

Here's a procedure for removing your dash and cluster. It's not that difficult. Expedition

I agree and I was a bit surprised by the remark. From the time I say I need to take my cluster out, to the time it's out and in my hands is under 15 minutes. Oh well, to each his own.
