C6 fluid

C6 fluid
The C6 should use type F. I use type F in my 72 with good results. This is what Ford recommends. Perhaps late models use Dextron/Mercon. Don't know if a rebuild with more modern clutches and etc would excuse the use of Dextron as the friction coefficient is different. At least that is my understanding of the differences between the fluids.

The type F fluid is correct if your Trans, has not been rebuilt. IF your trans has been rebuilt then the seals and clutch facings are no longer made of the same material so it is reccomended that you use the dexron/mercon type fluid. P.S. I used to be a certified rebuilder What I remember the most about Fords is that the type F fluid tended to varnish the inside of the tranny as time went on which made clean up a nightmare. The dexron/mercon doesnt seem to have this problem.

C6 fluid
The local parts guy sold me dexron for mine and I put it in, but then too late, read the dipstick that stated type F. It seems to work OK, but I notice a little slip on full throttle shifts. I am going to change it to type F when I find a lube place that can suck it all out.
Here is some email I got from the Penzoil/Quaker state folks:
==================================
Thank you for your email.
This vehicle is calling for a Type F fluid. What you will need to do is to
take the car back to the lubrication center and have them to drain the
Dexron III out and have them to put the Type F fluid into your vehicle. It
won't hurt the transmission, but it could cause the transmission to slip.
If you have any further questions please call our Technical Services
Department at 800-458-4998.
