license plate light problems

I bought a 99 F250 from a friend of mine and he told me the license plate light needed to be replaced. I checked the fusebox and everything was good, so i bought another light and bulb. I cut the wires into the old housing and wire-nutted the new housing to it, which is identical. Now I have no dash lights and my tail lamps do not work. Brake lights and headlights work, but nothing on the dash or parking lights. Ive checked bulbs and fuses and everything. I even reattached the old light housing and pigtailed it and the same problem continues. Any tips before I get the meter on it and try and find a short? Any help would be awesome!!

Thanks

I am not sure on the dash lights but I wired in some led license plate lights on my truck and they look great.

All the "running" lights are on the same fuse. You haven't looked hard enough for a blown one yet.

Or, you've blown that part of the rotary switch open in the headlight switch assembly.

Remember, there are two fuse boxes on these trucks. Get out the owner's manual from the glove box, or did your friend throw that away?

Wire nuts aren't a very good way to splice wiring on a motor vehicle, BTW.

I was laying in bed last night and thought of the headlight switch. And yes, he lost the book, but I'll steal the book from one of our company trucks. I'll jump on it after work. Thanks!

Just be sure it's for a '99, and since it is, be sure if it's "early" or "late", too.

Disconnect those wire nuts if you find a blown fuse, and then re-try the lights to make sure they once-again come on.
