Road trip report & some bad news.

Well, got back Saturday from our 5500 mi. journey to Glacier, Yellowstone & Grand Tetons Nat'l parks. What a trip WOW!!! If any of you are thinking of going to any of these parks, I highly recommend all of them. Truck really ran well, mpg's towing (5th-wheel 10,000 lbs.flat land) avg. 10.5/11.5. In the mtns. around 10.0. Over all very happy with the performance of the truck. Now the bad news. After unhooking trailer Saturday, parked truck in the garage until Wednesday. Got home from work wednesday, went over to garage to wash truck & first thing I see is oil on the floor . Pretty good size puddle 10.0 dia. roughly. Well, slide under truck & back of oil pan is soaked. Called dealer that day he told me to bring it in Thursday (today). He said he should now something Friday. My truck is a job 2 w/17,500 mi. Until now its been trouble free. I will let everyone know when I find out more info.

That's odd...could be something as simple as a crank seal...not that they are simple to fix, or anything...

Did you check your oil level? If you found this after you got home there's no telling how long it's been leaking. Would be worthwhile checking it and topping it off before running to the dealer. Sure, warranty would likely cover it if you burnt it up, but I'm sure you really don't want your truck to go through the trauma of a heart transplant...

Just curious, where in OH do you live?

There has been 2 or 3 guys come on here telling of the "bed plate" leaking. I don't know what it is but I've seen the posts.

Yes, did check the oil level before calling dealer it was ok. Don't know, this isn't something I am going to try to trouble shoot as this is my first diesel. If somthing major needs done ie bed plate, then that is that. Summer is when I use the hell out of my truck, so it needs to be fixed.

I live in noth central ohio Vermilion 40 mi. west of cleveland.

I would do just what you did. Kinda look at it see if you can see, check the fluids and let the warranty work for you. Keep us posted on the cause.

Glad you made it home ok. I have Yellowstone on my bucket list to do.

This is a good diagram of what the bedplate is. It supports the main bearings of the engine and adds strength to the bottom end of the engine.

Can be found on the last page of the "lubrication system" PDF in the light reading thread I posted yesterday.

Thanks Crazy. I've read a lot of that "light reading" but obviously not all of it yet. That's great stuff you found.

I've always been a car freak, but I knew next to nothing beyond basic theory of operation when I bought my '08. As such, I had lots of catching up to do. I found that one at www.thedieselgarage.com.

www.thedieselstop.com is also a great resource. I read everything I could get my hands on every chance I got until I got at least a basic understanding as to how everything works.

And I'm still learning! I just took the time to read how the fuel injection system works last night! Really amazing to me how they design a system to handle 26,000 PSI! Interestingly, to me at least, the injectors work by bleeding off pressure through a mushroom valve into a return tube, thus lowering the pressure holding the control rod in place, allowing high pressure fuel in the other chamber to overcome the rod at the other end, releasing pressure through the nozzle into the cylinders. This cycle repeats up to 5 times every combustion cycle in every cylinder...up to 14,000 pulses per minute at IDLE...

Really amazing stuff....at least to a geek like me!

Hey, good news. Got truck back late today. Apparently the drain plug was dripping. There is a gasket of some sort on the plug. They replaced the plug. Seems ok. Will keep an eye on it for a few days.
