Long time drooler....first post

Hello all,
been peeking through the window for a while now, drooling on everyones tires....nice site ,lots of great info and lots of helpful people.
Ive been driving ford trucks for a while now and i recently bought a 75 f250 supercab trailer special 4x2 from a member here on FTE.
So on to my first question..... Id love to be able to get a little better gas milage out of my 390, the motor runs great, i was told it was rebuilt about 30,000 ago.
Im going to do a basic tune up(plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points) and check the timing, but im open to ideas on inproving millage.
Thanks in advance for your assistance, Eric

First off welcome aboard, what kind of mileage are you getting now? an FE (390) in a 3/4 ton truck with the aerodynamics of a refrigerator is never going to get great mileage, at least not by current standards anyway, you mentioned points, a '75 should have electronic ignition if original, it sounds obvious but all you can really do is keep your tires aired up properly, keep the motor in tune, do routine maintenance and be gentle on the go pedal, i wouldn't expect anymore than 12-14mpg in a 390 F250 2wd.

10mpg isn't too bad, i get 8-10mpg out of my 390 (F250 4x4) combined highway/around town driving, you should be able to stretch 12mpg out of her.

Install headers and dual exhausts. This would help the mpg some but regarless what you do, don't expect miracles your'e driving a tank.
If you got 12-14 mpg that would be a miracle!
P.S. Welcome to FTE, lots of good info and good people here.

The absolute best I've ever got from my 390 (F250 4x4 a/ c6 auto) was 11.5mpg on a 400 mile trip about a month ago. I usually average about 8-10mpg in everyday driving.
