Guys ,I have a 03 Superduty,5.4 ltr. ,leaf springs all around . My tires are balanced and I still have a bad steering wheel shake . Any suggestions ?? Also does muffler cement work on a leaking manifold ? (has broken manifold stud) ,or any other quick fix ?? -thanks
Are your shocks good? Bad shocks will cause "ripple" like ware on tires. You can feel it when you run your hand along the tire tread. You will feel many little bumps on your tread. This can also cause steering shake.
Try the cement. Cram it in there good but clean it up first with a blast or 2 from a can of brake parts cleaner with the red tube. We need more info about your truck and shake.
Yes I rotated the tires . They are 31.5 x 16 but it didnt shake whan I first got them .Also I was assured that they are ballanced .My shocks are new Billenstein gas all around . Im wondering if the pitman or idler arm might be the culprit ???
It kinda sounds like your steering might be slightly out, and maybe not pulling, but enough for a warn stabilizer to rear its ugly head.
Also check ball joints. It is easy to check front end. Lay Under it, (engine off) have someone turn the steering wheel slightly back and forth, or you can while it is running stick your head out the window, and see how much steering wheel turn before your wheels move.
My thinking is , your stabilizer is tired, but fine for stock tires. When you put the bigger tires on. It worked for a while but, It accelerated the wearing out of the steering damper.
Thanks for the imformation .I will check the parts out (stabilizer and steering damper. .Is replacing manifold studs a big problem ? How many hours labor for 2 broken studs?
After fully investigating it yourself and have no luck take it to a reliable front end shop (they are not easy to find) and have them check it out. You didn't answer mustangs questions fully. Try to find different driving scenarios (braking, turning, different speeds etc..) that may increase or lessen the vibration. This will give you/us a better guess narrowing down the problem. Did it start to do it suddenly? Did it start after something specific was done , added or changed? A worn steering dampner in it self will not cause excessive constant vibration. It may after hitting even small bumps or rough roadways. Worn shocks can cause oscillation or a floating effect.
Yes the truck steering does vibrate more at certain speeds ,mostly from 80-120 km. cruising then also when I brake it still vibrates .My shocks are new .The tires are ballanced .If I am turnig it will shake more or a little less depending on what direction I am turning .--thanks
