My hood, grill and one fender were changed along the way so the hood ornament is not there. The grill on the truck is stamped 73 and has a spot for the red XLT emblum in the center. Would I have had an emblum for sure? Near as I can tell, my truck is exactly like yours. Other then the steel wheels, I painted white tonight. My orange 73 had the same wheel covers and the white stripe along the bottom. I'm kind of excited about adding the hood stripe when I repaint. Looks pretty good I think. Thanks for the photos. Nice truck.

alright i just called my old instructor and he said if it came with clear lenses from the factory then you have to replace the bulb with a amber bulb but if it is past a certain age which he thinks is 50 then you dont have to but still different DOT laws apply in different areas he said the best advice he could give was to call a inspection station around you and find out what the laws are were you live.

To my knowledge no one is making the two horizontal rubber bumper guards. However, the two vertical bumper guards are available.
My horizontal bumper guards are starting to shrink, and there is a gap between them and the vertical bumper guards.

There are Four explorer hood ornaments...
1975: Explorer over World (1975 only): D5TZ-16850-A
1976-1977: Explorer Blue: D6TZ-16850-B
1976-1979: Explorer Black: D8TZ-16850-A
1980-1981: Explorer Black: E0TZ-16850-A
These will not fit on the 1975-1979. (why they are mentioned). They are identicle in look to the black one for 1976-1979, except that the mount is different, because of the hood.
Fits 1980 and 1981 only.
1976-1977: There is also the Wreath with 3 lions (Brown) for the Ranger XLT Luxury Group: D6TZ-16850-A
Which is identicle to the Explorer hood ornament, except it has the 3 lions instead of Explorer on it. (but that's a different thread).

It spent the last 20 plus years in a barn in Curtis Ohio. That owner bought it used in 1978, he was 61 years old at the time.
In June 1982, he had 71,000 on it and replaced belts, hoses, thermostat, antifreeze, oil, & brakes.
I was told when he was not using it on his farm he parked it in the garage. This is where he put it in the mid to late 80's with 80,000 miles on the clock.
Apparently, he got another bigger truck to more fit his needs on the farm, and the Explorer set in the barn.
Unfortunately, he passed away at the very end of 2007, (91 years old) with an estate sale in July 2008. A woman in Millbury Ohio bought the truck for her 20 something daughter, who took one look at it and said she did not want anything to do with that old pappy truck, and went and bought a black sports car.
Well, mom put the truck on flEbay, which is where I got it and had a friend who owns a towing company, and I went and picked it up, (14 hr day).
So next month I will have had it for a year, and have been slowly working on it as funds permit.
The nice thing is, nothing has been butchered, or hacked up. The down side is everything is seized, and when you try to work on anything, it it a royal battle, and usually something will break, or snaps off.
I am about to pull the 300 I6 to replace the rear seal which is leaking at an alarming rate, and the oill pan gasket is shot. I am going to give it a freah paint job while it is out of the truck and give the engine bay a good cleaning.
It's nice it still has the original wheel covers too. But EVERYTHING that is bolted to it, is pretty much dried up and needs replacing. I think I put ten miles on it in the past year, which I hope to change soon. But it still has a garage to live in, and I keep it at 50 degrees in the winter.
I know I have gone off of the path of this thread, but though you would fine the back story on this truck interestring. Sorry for being long winded too!
PS: As you can probaly tell, I love the original stock look, and plan to keep it that way! It did not have halogen bulbs in it, and it had bias ply tires Atlas brand which were sold at Esso stations in the 70's. For those who don't know Esso became Exxon.
