Cash for clunkers.
Anyone heard of the new cash for clunkers program the government is gonna put on us? That sure is gonna put the hurt on us guys that drive these old trucks. The days of the Craigslist adds that read "I just bought a new truck and want this one out of my way for cheap" are soon to be gone. No way will someone be willing to sell us a decent ole truck for 2 grand when the government is willing to pay them 4500 bucks for it. It's effectively gonna put a 4500 dollar price tag on these trucks or the government is gonna send em to the crusher. That's sad.

Worst idea ever. If cars aren't selling its because they aren't worth buying or people can't afford them. If anything we should be fixing up and upgrading older vehicles instead of using up energy, money and raw materials to keep detroit running.
The good news is that like most government programs, this has more to do with posturing, then actual action. I doubt the program's mandate is far reaching enough or well funded enough to really affect us.

The criteria for cars that qualify is also pretty limited. A chevy caprice classic square body would qualify, but there aren't many of those left on the road. Even most 20 year old cars are now rated for 20 MPG or higher. Old pickups typically last longer and might qualify, but even then, not that many are still out there.
Maybe I am a hard core right wing funtamentalist. I say get government out of the economy and let things fall where they may. If people make silly investments and buy houses or cars they can't afford, why should the rest of us pay for that? Just because we saved a little more money? If anything we should be rewarded for keeping our own check book balanced.
There is a place for government regulation, but new cars are not worth buying and these ideas don't change that. The only thing that might change is slightly more expensive new cars.

Maybe you can tone it down enough to not get in trouble if you say what you're thinking? From what I have seen on this and other forums all over the web, most of us seem to be in agreement that something is not quite right with whats going on. That is, unless you are on a tree hugger forum where they all think that we have to give up all our freedoms to save the world from CO2. I love the "err on the side of caution" argument when they can't answer direct questions on why the global warming theory doesn't hold water.
