Vacuum and smog mess.
#18
i have a 86 f 150, the smog pump and a/c pump are gone. i have replaced, the tranny filter, tranny mount, both motor mounts, cap, rotor, plugs. i rebuilt the carb but it still uses gas. also put in new tranny fluid. when i shift my truck into gear, the truck idles rough until i get it going and its ok. when i put it in to reverse it slams hard and when i put it in to drive its smoother. could it be avaccum leak casusing the slamming into reverse?
the carb still smokes. are is there something i can do to fix my truck.

First of all, replace that donut. I would guess a wager that that is what you're seeing smoking. That's a lot of space for exhaust to be coming out. (I imagine you have a lot of noise too.)
How does the truck idle when it's in neutral? Which transmission do you have? I'm guessing the C6 3 speed auto. If that's the case, there's just one vacuum line to it. If you think it's a culprit, just replace the line. It's cheap stuff, and better than guessing. My brother's C6 had a 1" long hole in his vacuum line and it wouldn't shift at all, so leaks do quite a bit.
It also sounds like you're on the right track with all the stuff you've replaced.
PS: If you figure out how to rebuild a carb that doesn't use gas any more, you'll be rich.

I'm not sure what side it's on, but it should be the only vacuum line going to the transmission from the engine. However, the vacuum only tells the transmission when to shift, not what selection to put it into (like D, 2, 1, R, N, etc.) If you're having issues with the shifter, your shift linkage, or the transmission itself is having issues.
If your engine idles smoothly when in neutral, that means your engine is running pretty nice. Your transmission seems to be more of a culprit.
