Easiest way to identify a highboy
#16
Point being? BTW I have seen an original `59 F100 and it sat up as high as any so called highboy but for the sake of disscussion lets stick to the F250.

I don`t get where you are going with these questions and how they relate to my statements. My point is that Ford did not set out to build so called Highboy or lifted truck.Chevys and Dodges of that era sat very high also though not as high as an F250.If Ford had waited until the 1980 restyle of the F series line to lower the F250 there would be none of this Highboy nonsense.

I'm going to take a look at a truck this weekend and want to know the easiest way to identify it as a highboy or not.
It is a 76 F250 4x4, manual trans with a 390 and a divorced transfer case.
Although I like the looks of the highboys I am not interested in purchasing one. From everything I have read they are a bit harder to work on and even harder to find certain parts for. I am somewhat new to the dentside world and would prefer something a that I will be able to find parts for and be able to work on and learn on.
Thanks in advance.

This '3 window" Coupe is not considered a High Boy either.
The original hot rodders definition of a 'Hi-Boy' was a Deuce (1932 Ford) Roadster with the fenders, running boards and splash shields removed which exposes the body riding high atop the frame rails.

To answer you question to the best of my memory ability....from all the FTE Highboy threads.....IOM
1. look for a cross member between the front frame horns, below the front bumper
2. front spring pack will have 6 or 8 leaves?
3. back springs will be 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 wide?
4. a ram style steering cylinder on the front axle/tie rod end w/ p/s lines
5. steering g/b on frame will have p/s lines going to it
6. behind the seat tank or saddle bag tank, cause frame is narrower in rear, BIG maybe
on this one.
7. divorced xfer case (not direct attached to trannie)
8. front/rear drive shafts are close to same length
This what I use to figure out what I am looking at, hope this helps, nice truck you are looking at requardless of it's highboy or not status.

1973/76 and 1977 F250 4WD's (1977: before serial number Y20,001) offered Power Assist P/S which includes a Control Valve and Ram Cylinder.
When a vehicle has Power Assist P/S, the steering gearbox is the manual type...so there are no hoses going to it.
There are 4 P/S hoses with Power Assist.
Two (Pressure & Return) from the P/S Puimp to the Control Valve.

Besides the 1973/77 4WD F100/250's and 1969/74 Econolines, most of the FoMoCo passenger cars from 1953 thru 1964 and some from 1965 thru 1980 had Power Assist P/S.

kahuna, to stop using the name "highboy" would be one of the top stupidest things a ford guy can do. yes ford did not have a "highboy" package or option. its just a nickname for about the most bad a** trucks ever built just like the highboy name given to 32's by hot rodders. i have loved fords all my life and to me a highboy is like a dream truck or something. to stop using the name would almost make you cease to be a ford guy.

I know that is not the only thing that makes a Highboy sit high ,I am aware that the front springs are mounted under the frame as opposed to outside the frame and all the other differences between the pre 77.5 and post 77.5 trucks. It just seems to me that when the uninformed see that spacer they think lift.
