antifreeze leak above starter???
I have an 04 f350 super crew that has developed what appears to be an antifreeze leak somewhere above the starter between the bell housing and the block. I cant see above the starter to find whats up there to leak. Any ideas where this is coming from?

Page 11: Component Locations Check in the valley there is a hose about two and a half inches long that runs to the egr cooler that has been known to leak.

Funny you should post this now. I was stringing up the Christmas lights today and noticed a very small puddle under the truck. Crawled under there with the flash light and lo and behold, coolant running off the DS head, down the block and off the starter. Popped the hood and traced the leak back to the heater hose on / off valve. Has a very small weep coming out of it. Ofcourse, like most of the truck, its plastic! May pay to check yours also.

How in the world can you guys see up in there above the starter? Ive even had mine up on a hoist and cant see *****. Ive tried looking and feeling around below the turbo/egr and cant see much. does the orange hose typically leak at the front or back? I cant find a moisture at the front of it but cant reach the back side. Thanks for the input. This web site has been a god send for us 6.0er's.

Climb up and check again with the engine cold. You ought to be able to see below the EGR coolant hose for coolant pooling up on top of the engine with a flashlight. This dissappears after the engine gets hot and reappears when it cools off. I was able to see it and reach under the turbo and feel the coolant. The hose is about 35 dollars and two hours of your time if you do it yourself. At least you hope its this hose, other sources of the leak are more pricey.

The orange hose is an old hose (known to leak when cold)the new improved ones are blue. The only places that could leak coolant on that part of the motor is the head, frost plug or from a passage on top of the motor. If the gasket was unsealed you would likely have other issues. If you remove the boost tube from the turbo it gives you a better view of the area. Clean the mating surfaces on the tube and give them a shot of hair spray before torquing the clamp to spec.(I am out of town so I don't have access to my manual to tell you the number)
