Starting problems ......

I try not to bug you guys and gals by posting alot but lately I just can't help it. My truck has had a problem starting lately. I go out and wait for the light to go out and crank it, it turns over very slowly and then right before it starts it speeds up. Or sometimes you can hear the starter kick out but it will not turn over. Also when I go thru the drivethru window and shut off the truck so the person can hear, I have a trouble starting it again. Now this past Monday I took out my pcm to send to dp, we have gotten alot of rain this week, and today when I put the pcm back in it would not start. It was making a clicking noise under the dash and no warning lights would turn on when you would turn the key on. If you would go back and forth with the key it would eventually kick the lights on but would no turn over. I jumped it and let it run for about ten min. , turned it off to see what it would do and would not start. I have had the starter checked, and the battiries load tested. Also have cleaned all the connections and filled up the batteries up to the full mark with distilled water. I am completely lost on what else to do. When you clean the connections up it will crank right up and do ok for a couple days but then back to the slow cranking. I am sorry about the long post I didn't mean to ramble but I wanted to give as must info as possible.

It sounds as if your batteries are weak. If you hook a charger or jump start it does it fire up? I would also check all grounds and connections including the one at the starter. Check for corrosion also. While your under the truck make sure your starter hasn't come loose. You need at least 10.5 volts to fire the idm.

Check your starter bolts, and the wire connections at the starter.

Sounds like Jim is pointing you in the right direction. Also, have your alternator checked. Sounds like it may not be charging your batteries. Remember, you can't check these batteries hooked up, you have to unhook them to check them.

I un hooked the batteries to check them, I also just cleaned up the starter connection when I had it off to check it. The batteries almost always read 12.6 when they are just sitting there. I have not checked the frame ground though. I will do that and get back to ya. Thanks guys.

Have someone try and crank the engine while check the voltage at each battery. If it drops below 10.5 volts, then theres your trouble. You could have a bad starter, they do wear out. How did you have it checked?

IMO 10 minutes idling is not enough time to recharge dead batteries, if they are in fact the problem. Take it for a good 20 minute drive or so.

I took the starter to advanced and they checked it on the machine.

The idle ten min. was just to let the moisture burn off. They batteries read 12.6 before trying to start.
