Replacement Door VIN tags?

Replacement Door VIN tags?
I know this is a LONG shot but is there any way to get a replacement door VIN tag? I bought a '79 crewcab and the driver's door has been replaced. Unfortunately the person who did this didn't swap the buck tag over to the new door so now it has a VIN that doesn't match the title there. There is a sticker from Ford Canada on the body in the door jamb with the correct VIN, the cowl VIN tag shows the correct VIN and the frame shows the correct VIN. I don't suspect any foul play, I would just like to have everything match. Especially because if I get pulled over, that will be the first place that the officer will look........ Plus, I just want everything to match!

I don't know if this outfit is still in business, but they are a graphics arts firm that made replacement serial # plates for old tractors. I just sent them the old plate and they made a brand new copy. I bought several from them 10 years or so ago. I assume they could put different numbers on it if you told them what they are. It is: Kayenay Graphics, 840 S. 12th St. NW, Mason City, IA 50401, 641-424-2535.
If you go that route, post back and let us know if they are still doing it.

Rob, I recently received my VIN tag along with a new door jamb sticker from Marti. Basically, you order a Deluxe build report and tell them you want a new tag and/or sticker. For both metal tag and sticker along with the report, I paid just over $100. It was a bit expensive, but well worth it. Tag/sticker are EXACTLY like original. Now, I just need to rivets to get mine on. Also, just a heads up, It took something like 3 months to get my stuff. Hopefully, it won't take that long with yours, but the quality was worth the wait.

AFAIK, there's no contract between Ford and Marti.
Marti provides the build sheets, VIN labels on some but not all vehicles dating back to the 1960's.
The process to get new VIN tags from Ford originally (prolly now, too) was much more involved then just providing a VIN number.
The particular state DMV, Ford parts department, body shop or garage (if applicable), legal owner of the vehicle and in some cases the police were involved.
All this rigamarole was done this-away to prevent stolen vehicles from getting factory VIN tags with new numbers.
The dealers partsguy called FoMoCo on a special phone number and had to provide the dealers secret P&A code, then the process could begin.
A signed statement from the legal owner had to be sent to Ford, the VIN had to be run thru the DMV to prove that the legal owner owned the vehicle.
In some states the police and/or DMV investigator had to come out and look at the vehicles frame number to see of it matched the VIN on the plate and title.
All this was necessary to replace the VIN labels, usually the reason was damage to the label due to accidents, fire or theft.
The only way to get this info was thru the parts department, and then only by an authorized member of the department.
The whole process was a time consuming PITA!

I don't have any pics right now. But, they look exactly like the original. I can't say enough on the quality. And the report was very detailed.
And I was thinking that maybe it took so long to get the information was a "waiting" period. I was never told that or anything, but I have to wonder if it was a legal thing to prevent any tampering with a vehicle. If a vehicle was stolen and had to wait 3 months to get a VIN plate or sticker, that would cause some issues right there.

Is what Marti is doing inre to VIN's legal, or not?
Depends on the state you reside in.

On some of these vehicles, what we call a VIN plate is actually a build plate, so Marti can legally replicate them. I had the same question about my 76. What I thought was the VIN plate on the door, is not really the VIN plate, but a build plate. The complete VIN is actually located on the right frame rail, and it is stamped, not a plate.

RobC - I called Marti Auto works a couple weeks ago about making a duplicate door jamb VIN sticker for my 1978 crew before I have it repainted. John told me he could not reproduce the VIN stickers for Canadian built vehicles (ie. our beloved crewcabs) because he doesn't have the correct blanks. So, if the door tag has Made In Canada in painted letters, (which I think it does), I don't think Marti can make these. You can double check with him if ya still want to.

There are no Canadian specific Warranty Plates used after 1965.
1966 and later...they're the same as US Warranty Plates.
The white plastic sticker is the Certification Label, not the Warranty Plate. AFAIK, it's the same for US or Canada, as long as the truck was sold new in the USA.
The only thing Canadian in the VIN in the C Assembly Plant code denoting Ontario Canada Assembly Plant.
I've decoded dozens of US VIN's where the truck was sold new in places like Pittsburgh PA or Albany NY, etc, but the truck was assembled in Canada. Not all of these were crew cabs, either.
