GT40P heads? how hard to put on? how much HP and torque?
I have a 1989 f150 with a 302 5 spd. It has underdrive pulleys, MSD ignition, Bassanni headers and forward exit exhaust.
I was looking at putting on the GT40P heads on. How much HP and torque do you think I have now and How much do you think I would have after putting the heads on. Also how hard is this job to do? Ive never rebuilt a truck engine before. I would probably want to put in all new pistons and rings while i have it all opened up right? I know the general concept of engine rebuilding because ive done it to my dirtbike but never to a truck.
Thanks - pete

You're engine came with 185hp? or 205hp? The headers and exhaust, probably 10-15hp, the MSD about 10hp, pulleys about 5hp. So i'd estimate that if you had 185 stock, you probably have about 175hp or so at the flywheel, yes 175. You're engine is an 89, probably has many miles on it and is worn and tired. But that is pretty much a guess, you'd have to dyno it. Any aftermarket product will give you an overrated HP number, so you have to go lower. If a website said a 6psi supercharger made an extra 100hp, i'd say it's really around 80.

The heads...around 25-30hp i believe I remember someone saying.

Those numbers do sound about right for a performance head, even mild, but keep in mind, the lightning with GT-40 everything (heads, intake, high torque cam)only made an additional 30HP over the stock 210 on the 351w. In other words, I wouldn't look for it to turn your truck into a sports car but you should see results much better than any previous mod you have done.

I'm 90% sure they don't.

GT40P heads? how hard to put on? how much HP and torque?
The P heads did have their own specific headers, but FMS has redesigned most of the GT header sets to fit any of them now. If you read the factory notes in the catalog or on their site, they give production notes to which header will fit which ones. I think most will fit now...

Pete,
IIRC, your heads (E7TE) have 63cc chambers, the GT-40p heads have 59cc chambers. The chamber shape is improved, and the spark plug is relocated toward the center of the chamber. The exhaust port has a larger radius and it flows better than other stock heads. This head is excellent. Look for the thinnest head gasket you can find. I think ROL makes a .039" head gasket.
I believe the valve sizes on the GT-40p are 1.84/1.46. Kind of an oddball combination but it seems to work. I don't exactly remember what the valve sizes are on the E7TE, 1.84/1.54?. Everything from your current heads will go onto the GT-40p heads except for some of the valves, and the headers/exhaust manifold.
I say - do it.

The GT40P heads do require a special header. If you are using it in a turck only one company makes the headers. I put these on my 93 F150 and they helped the power a lot. But changing one of the plugs requires you to unbolt the header to get the plug out and 90 deg plug wires are a must.

OUCH.... I don't know what headers you bought but I guess you got ripped! I used the MAC headers from Central Coast Mustang and I dont have to unbolt the header to change the plugs! What I do is take a 5/8's plug socket and put it on the plug. Then you take an open ended wrench (forget what size) and turn the socket with the wrench. It is a piece of cake! Not hard to do at all...
