son reversed jumper cables
my son hooked the jumper cables on reverse on 1977 f150 with a 390 he said there was some poping and smoke coming from the battery side of the engine. does any one know what could have blown from this, or if this happend to you and how you fixed it, also if anyone knows or has a diagram of where the fuseable link is. thank you very much~Blake

The smoke most likely came from the rectification diodes in the alternator; there are six of them and they are reverse biased straight from BATT to ground and straight reverse voltage across them could have smoked them. awsmev, this is why you had to have your alternator replaced.
In other words, blakeusa - my guess is the smoke came from the diodes in the alternator so you might be looking at alternator problems. I would pull it and have it checked at Autozone or somewhere similiar - an alternator test machine should be able to find an open diode pretty easily. I would have the voltage regulator checked too, for good measure.

My stepdad ran me over when I was a kid, I was holding the jumper clamps at one end, the other end still attached to the battery in his truck. Clamps touched, sparks flew, truck died. He kept having to replace miscellaneous things after that, after awhile the truck was "stolen" and he received a healthy insurance check. 20+ years later, I'm still a bit jumpy around jumper cables.

It was definitely an accident, we were jumping an old Datsun pickup (it was orange, too, lol). He got thing started, I removed the cables, then he attempted to put it in reverse but instead it lurched forward and knocked me down. Back in those days, I was scrappy enough to flatten out and fit underneath. He found reverse real fast, thinking I was pinned between the two trucks. No major injuries, a little bruised, a lot terrified of jumper cables.
Unless it required a doctors visit, we never told mom anything that happened out at the truck yard (he owned a dump trucking business). If my mother only knew...
