Can I go from a 400 to a 429 or 460

I just purchsed another truck this one is a F-100 custom 6 .5 foot stepside with a 400 engine and C-6 trans in it . Will a 429 or 460 bolt right in ? It has Factory A/C and I am not sure but the buttons on the steering wheel is that Cruise control ?

You need different engine mounts, engine accessories (bracketry) for 2 things,

The 460 should swap over cheaper.

The 429 will require a different torque convertor as the crankshaft to TC is different.

A Cruise control swap over will require the special 429/460 engine C/C assembly.

Cruise control involves a special harness beyond the steering column.

I can explain in detail if need be.

ok so I need all the brakets with the engine . The engine mounts along with the flywheel . If I already have cruise control in the truck I need the harness that goes with a 460 rather then the 400 .

Would this work for a doner truck and do they sell the harness as an after market piece .

Flywheel ?

You said you have a C6 automatic.

You have to state what year 460 you have

On a 429 the back end of crankshaft where the nub of the Torque convertor fits when mated is TOO small for the T/C of the 400 to fit.

It may fit the older 460.

Cruise control: You need the 460 engine bracketry for attaching the actuator as it mounts different than on a 400.

why not just stick a 4 bbl on the 400 and keep it? still plenty of power. truck looks good, good price too.

yes I am thinking of doing just that . Rebuilding the engine with the Aussie heads , Better Cam, 2v 4 barrel intake and headers . I want it to be a nice fun street truck. Thinking of doing a color change to black with a flame job.

I didn't have any problem mating C6 to the 429 when I swapped out the 400

I think I changed my mind and I am now leaning more toward waking up the 400 with a rebuild.

I have not purchased any replacement engines for it yet so no years on a 460 or 429.

What Aussie heads should I use on a 400. I have read 302 Aussie heads but I have seen 351 for sale?
