Tailgate trim piece. What trucks had it?

Example

My truck is a 79 F100 Ranger XLT.. Racetrak trim, etc. I have a nice "ford" trim panel on my tailgate. Should I also have this piece? My truck has been repainted, I wonder if the piece was damaged so the shop just filled the holes and left it off?

My XLT had holes in the tailgate for it so I think I paid like $90 for that piece and the FORD piece. It's possible that your tailgate was switched too or filled like you said. I think it was for just XLT models which is the only model I've seen it on. If different I'm sure someone will jump in soon with the answer.

From my experience Ive seen the F O R D chrome piece on some ranger package trucks but most all XLT and Lariats. I have only seen the upper chrome piece on XLTs and Lariats and never on Rangers. That might not be totally correct but its what Ive seen. Then again its probably possible to get it as an add on for a Custom truck.

Ditto what STG said, I have only seen that piece on XLT's and Lariat's.

Like anything else back then you could order an individual option without having to buy a group package to get it.

So it sounds like I can put it on and no one would question it..

Yes I know it's my truck I can do what I want, and I know mine is sorta street rodded, but I'm **** like that.

How does this trim attach anyway? I can't seem to figure it out.

Pull the tailgate access plate off and there are screws?

This is the upper tailgate trim panel-used on 1973/79 F100/350 Rangers, Ranger XLT's and Lariats.

If the truck came with the upper bodyside mouldings with the black vinyl inserts, it had this panel on the tailgate along with the center trim panel that spelled out F O R D: D3TZ-99425A34-A

D3TZ-99425A34-B .. Tailgate Finish Panel-Upper ~ The attaching hardware was furnished with the panel.

It is held on to the tailgate by 6 clips that fit into the channel on the backside of the moulding.

6 phillips headed pan head type screws screwed to the clips from the back side of the tailgate.

NOTE: In 1976 only, this panel also came in brown, as did the vinyl upper body side mouldings.

i'm searching for the hardware part numbers...brb

Really? I bought a brand new Ranger XLT in 79 and it had the upper trim with the black molding but it did not have this extra tailgate trim piece on it. My current 79 is an XLT and it also has the upper trim with black molding and does not have the rear gate piece. I have seen probably hundreds of XLT's with the trim without this piece on the gate.

Really..

I'm quoting what the parts catalog sez. > > for example 1977/79 F100/350 EXTERIOR MOULDING SECTION F / PAGES 28/29.

Another example 1973/79 F100/350 = section F pages 24/25.

If Dennis (Mil1ion)comes along, mebbe he can post these illustrations..I can't...I'm using Genuine Ford microfiche slides.

Get a parts catalog and see for yourself. >> hipoparts.com

I too bought a new 1979 F150 pickup (a Lariat), and this panel was on the tailgate.

I've been in the car hobby since the 1950's, and one thing that has remained constant over the years is ppl who own these old cars & trucks have parts catalogs.

Except here.

Back in the 1950's/70's parts catalogs were only available in hugh printed manuals, or on microfiche...not on the the scanned CD's that one can buy today for less than 30 bucks.

It amazes me that ppl can get along without them.

The illustrations alone are worth the 30 buck price.

Arguments can be settled in seconds...not dragged on for days at a time.

I thought only XLT's and above had this trim? IIRC, Rangers has the brushed "F-O-R-D" trim, and XLT's added the black trimpiece above it. But that's just based on what I've seen.

Bill, if you could come up with that number, I'd appreciate it.. Or even if there is an aftermarket (help!) set of clips that will work. I'm fairly sure I can't be the only one to run into this problem.

When ever I see that panel on the gate most of the time it is on a Lariat equipped truck. I have seen quite a few XLT's without that piece.

Here is my truck that I bought brand new in 79. Ranger XLT model. Rear bumpers were not standard equipment back then and being 18 I was happy to cut the cost of the truck.

Here is my current Ranger XLT.

Here is my current Ranger XLT.
NO lower body side mouldings = NO upper tailgate panel.

I'm confused, which is it Bill? My current 79 has the lower molding and no piece on the gate. I'm most certain it is the original lower molding.

You're confused?

Try typing this crappola to a blind audience!

I'm working on the hardware for the trim panel,

When I get the numbers figured out, I'll try again.

Some of the info I posted above was incorrect...I tried editing....but,

...when one has roadrunner "hi speed" internet that can turn into no speed internet...coupled with the FTE database problem, my last two posts went POOF!!
