Cool Follow up to "My truck was stolen": I have to make the hard choice

There are not many 6.0's in my neck of the woods that I can either afford, trust or both... I'm under the gun to get out of the rental roller skate and back into my own ride due to the impending insurance settlements (yes, there will be two settlements one 3rd party and one GAP). My dilemma is this... I can get a V10 Super Duty at a great price and there are many from which to choose, but I'm not able to do an effective comparison of the 6.0 diesel to the 6.8 gasser. Any fact based input is very welcome at this point.
Speak, my brothers.

Sorry to hear of your loss.... Whatever vehicle you decide on get an OASIS report done on it via the 6.0 forum as there are folks who will run it for free. Just takes time for them to get it. 2-3 days. Depending on use / desires they are about equal except the diesel will give a better MPG but it is more expensive general maint wise.

What price range you shopping in? You can get a truck shipped for as little as 500 depending what transport company you use. I had my last truck shipped from Texas and it cost me $850.00 because it came on a multi car trailer. Just food for thought, that way you can widen your search. Don't leave the 6.0 for the V-10. It will eat you alive in fuel costs. Also you just don't feel as cool without that beautiful powerstroke emblem ridin' with you on the doors.

Check out the lease turn-ins that some of these dealers have. There's a place or two out (or, i guess up) around Riverside are that has some pretty clean ones most of the time. PM if you would like the name.

I have nothing bad to say about the 6.8 V10. I had one and loved it and at times when it is -30 or so outside it made life alot easier. It does however burn 50% more fuel doing the same driving I do with the 6.0. That adds up in a hurry if you are doing any amount of towing. If your not, it isn't as bad as you aren't using fuel as fast. All depends on how you use your truck and how many miles a year you drive. I was sorry to see your post when your truck got stolen. It seldom ends with a happy ending. Hope you find a nice truck to replace what you lost. It'll be like starting out with a fresh sheet of paper.

Thanks, but upon looking at their stock, I see that is is as similar to that of San Diego... A lot of old, high mileage over priced trucks... I have a very tightened budget due to many, many causes that are out of my immediate ability to overcome, so I'm not going to travel out of the area, have a truck shipped in from out of state, etc... Thank you very much for the suggestions everyone, but my question was about the 6.0 vs the V10. Besides the fuel consumption differences and the ability for Matt to tune the 6.0 like a magician, I'm not seeing much difference.

My old truck was kicking my butt with a $500.00/mo payment, so I'm not ever going to do that again. In some ways this is a blessing in disguise. I'm going to be lucky to break even after the insurance settlement dust settles. Starting from zero in a sellers market (the 6.0 market) and trying to keep the payments very low makes this a nearly impossible mission. Sure, I can get one cheep, but it may be a huge mistake down the road. I'm done making mistakes on trucks.

at the risk of being struck by lightning how bout and F-150. You can get similar capabilities, same great Ford craftmanship, but reduce price and fuel consumption. They are offering 0% on 07's. My buddy just picked up a new crew cab for 28,000 brand new and his payments are lower than five hundred a month. Just a thought?

Sorry to hear you might have to leave the 6.0 club, but you have to do what is right by you and yours. My only concern would be, why are there so many used V10's on the market? It may be worth a visit and some chats on the V10 forum. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Yup... I thought the same thing. From what I've gathered, the V10's were, for the most part, traded in on 6.4's. That all happened prior to the flip-flop on fuel costs. Diesel is now .25 to .45 cents more per/gallon than regular gas in SoCal; as a resident East County boy, you know the score on that. People took a calculated risk, much like I'm now having to do. I'm not sure the correct answer exists on the fuel question, so I have to factor other things. I have not made any decisions, but I am trying to keep my options fluid.

I've owned two F150's, and both of them towed my trailer OK. The '99 2wd was too small to hold the boy's in the back seats (super cab), so I traded it in on an '01 Crew Cab 4x4. That truck was a great ride, but it kept trying to kill me by shearing ball joints without warning, apparent cause or regard for my sanity. There were posts in the F150 forum by me on this truck, but I'm not motivated to find that old news at the moment. The F150 is not out of the running in my search, but is is a fall back plan well down the list of possibilities. The way the economy has impacted my fun-time, I've only had the opportunity to tow my trailer about twice a year. Not really a large justifier for a "can tow anything at anytime" truck. My ride was just a daily driver that could yank the trailer up the SoCal hills without a care in the world. The F150's worked their tails off to maintain 35 MPH on a couple of those same hills... This is a matter of what I want over what I need.

Scumbag is putting it nicely.....Not that you would want any memories of this, but how much could you buy the truck back for? Someone might buy it for SUPER cheap and make a good truck out of it again....Was the motor smoked?
