6.0 power loss and smoke problem
i have a 03 6.0 it started smokin and not having any power. i took it to the dealer and they said i have an aftermarket air cleaner and that dirt got past it an caused my turbo to go bad. they told me i need a new turbo and that the engine needs to be cleaned of the carbon and they would be happy to help me for $3,000.00
so i started doing research on this site and think im having the same problem as alot of people here whats with the dealer not being able to find these problems.
any advice on solving the problem i dont have any engine lights or codes lit

Well it is possible that you dusted a turbo, and possibly an engine. But unless the dust ruined your valve seals and or piston walls (in which case cleaning carbon wont fix anything) the cause of your carbon buildup is most likely from emmisions componants and if it actually needs cleaned should be covered under warenty. Can you pull of the intake hose to the turbo from the filter and take us a couple pictures of the impeller fins? email them to me at efoster@spartandieseltech.com If you cannot post attatchments.

Well the turbo does not look dusted at all and your hoses look clean so unless the dealer cleaned them out I dont think thats the problem. There is a good chance Bowtiehatr is right about your EGR valve, if it is stuck open then you will smoke alot and definetly have low power. Is your turbo building boost pressure? When you had it appart did you wiggle the turbo shaft? A little play is normal, alot of play is bad. I would hope any dealer could diagnose a sticking vgt also, but I have been amazed before.

Unless I am wrong, backpressure holds the egr closed unless the solinoid opens the valve. It is possible for boost pressure to force it open but if your boost is that high you are probably running a tune that is severly overboosting your engine or a vgt issue is causing an overboost condition.

This last weekend I was pulling my 30' trailer up a long grade when I suddenly heard a whooshing sound and black smoke was pouring out the exhaust. I could only go about 3 mph up the grade and I was driving a 2004 F350 with only 17,000 miles on the odometer. I had it towed to the local Ford dealer and they said it was a hole in the boost hose and the EGR valve. They also said that while they have it, they would fix the leaky main rear seal. It took them only one day to fix the problems and I was back on the road running better than ever. I'm sure glad I was still under warranty.
