vin decoding - '42 or a '46

Hi Don, Canadian serial numbers decode differently than US production. The 401 would identify the Make and Model. H is the assembly plant code for "Home Office", Windsor, Ontario. 47 is the year, the remainder is the consecutive unit number. My catalogs cover 48 and later trucks, so I can't decode the 401 for you. My catalogs do reference trucks built in Vancouver as having a V in the serial string as opposed to the Windsor H, but I don't believe I've ever seen one or seen anyone post a truck built anywhere besides Home Office/Windsor. Hope this helps.

This below Van Pelt web page has helped me sort out my earlyish (799Y) 47 and contrast it with its late 46 (1GY) brother. These two M-H tonners have front axles two digits apart, #374 under the 46 vs #376 under mine.
To add to this picture for the other M-H guys, the earliest 1948 F-2/3 (R3-4) that I have archived has axle #397. Assuming the pattern held showing axles being assigned in number order, that’s very few conversions in 1947. Stu
