HELP 01 fuel filter change

ok i'm in the process of changing my oil and fuel filter and i am drawing a blank on how to change the fuel filter. I went to napa and bought the filter along with the disconnect tool. I've read other posts on how to change it but something doesn't seem right with mine. I've attached pics as to what i am working with. Any help would be greatly appreachiated. Thanks

You use the end of the "X" tool that fits around the filter pipe and the "fingers" of the tool face out towards the truck fuel line.. inside the shield on the fuel line there is a keeper that the tool fingers release.

It helps to have three hands.. best way is to get the tool fingers inside and up aginst the retainer and then push that fuel line and filter together at the same time as using the tool to release the keeper. I use my thumb and finger on the tool and push the fule line in with other hand.. Wear eye protection.. I always get a little squirt...

No tool needed to put new filter in just listen for the click

Once you see one apart it is much clearer to see how it locks to gether

I bought a filter for my 99' today and it came with the little white clips pictured with the above tool.
I am going to assume I don't need these clips but what are they for?

I never use them. I assume they are for a different type of fitting where the plastic piece locks the fitting on the collar/flare.

After wrestling with this for 45 minutes I gave up.
Any tricks to this?

Pull back the metal retaining clips that slip over the fittings. I use the tool to pull off the rear plastic fitting first. The rear fitting is a little different than the metal front fitting.(PlasticvsMetal Fittings may vary with year) Pull of the rear fitting with the tool. Pull the filter out of the holder(pull hard its in there tight) Pull the front fitting off with the tool. Slip the connectors over the new filter (make shure that the arrow is pointing with the fuel flow) until they snap into place.

I use the long Napa tool like pictures above.(Use the small end) slip it over the filter stem, clost the tool and wiggle it between the connector to spread apart the reatiners inside the fitting/connector. You'll have to pull firmly to remove it as the o-rings are keeping a seal on the filter. Just don't force it. You'll want some rags to catch the gas that comes out of the filter. After changing 6 filters I can change one in a couple minutes. The first time is the hardest.
