antifreeze leak/cyl head

Hello, i've got a '93 ranger with a 4.0 V6. it just turned over 100,000 miles and has an antifreeze leak coming from behind the drivers side motor mount. I suspect a head gasket or cracked head. it's using a bunch, about 1 gallon per week. no water in the oil or anything. Does anybody know if these engines were prone to cracked heads or head gasket leaks? appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks, Kent

I have read of a few isolated incidents of a leaking head gasket on the drivers side of the 4.0 and susbequent coolant loss. The problem is about as far from common as you can get.

That would be a pretty big leak for a headgasket, you should also consider a possible leaky lower intake gasket.

This article might be of some interest to you, particularly the TSB that's attached at the end:

If you are not experiencing any rough engine issues, then its probably not a head gasket, more probably a rusted freeze plug. If the anit freeze has not been regularly changed it has a tendency to rust things out.
