f250 abs module

f250 abs module
Can anyone help with troubleshooting a problem I'm havin' with an abs light that's on constantly. My speedometer doesn't work periodically and I think my ABS is not working at all (occasional rear wheel lock-up in slippery conditions). My local dealer says it will cost almost $1000 to replace the ABS control module and I'm skeptical because of the cost. Could it be a sensor only or is there anyway to tell?

It sounds like you may have a speed sensor going out. It is located on top of the differential and looks at a toothed wheel located inside the differential. It provides input to the speedometer, cruise control, ABS......anything that has to do with speed.
I've read of prices anywhere from $20 - $40 for them. That's where I'd start because the speedometer itself has nothing to do with the ABS module.

Thanks guys & Iknew there would be a better solution to start troubleshooting instead of the Dealer always wanting to just replace everything from the start. It wouldn't be such a bad idea to replace it all if you had unlimited resources but I would rather spend my money on something to make it go faster and tow stronger!

Thanks - Whitmo -
I'll post my results after a new vss is installed. Hopefully I won't have to visit the dealer again, everytime I get some absurd estimate.
FYI two months ago I took my truck in for a grinding/ rattling noise when 4 wheel was engaged and got a quote of $865 to replace the front drive shaft. After a little research I found a rebuild shop in town that charged $220 for a complete rebuild. I've tried two seperate dealers for quality of service but they all are interested in charging the maximum for repairs.
Thanks for the Napa tip.

A while back, my 01 was losing the speedometer. Tried the speed sensor, same thing. Took it to Ford, comp. showed the speedometer module itself. They ordered a new one and it did the same thing. After 4 trips to the shop, the mech finally found the antilock brake controller had a whole in it. Problem solved. Truck had been wrecked and it had a crack in the module that let water in when i washed my motor.

Mine is right behind the drivers headlight. I lost my speedometer right after washing the engine compartment so i knew it had to be water getting in somewhere. I first tried unplugging and spraying something to dissipate water, then blowing out all the electrical connections i could find under the hood...man there are a lot of plugs under there lol. Good luck with yours, let us know what you find!!

Well, Champion Auto had the correct sensor that I needed. Every little glich went away after I replaced it. The part was $13, you tell me weather my dealership was trying to overcharge me for parts that weren't needed.
$13 and a little advice from you guys really helped me out. Thanks!
