Smile want 302 in 88 ranger 5spd but keep trans. lets talk bellhousings!

I have a 88 ford ranger with a 2.0 5 spd and 3.73 open 7.5
This little truck runs SO good! I bought it for 590$ and it runs like only something with an old motorcraft 2 barrel can.
But its like someone said about a line of cars behind you on a hill.
EMBARASSING!!!!

I have located a LS out of a HO stang and now I need a little more.

I have a few 302s hangin out and I want one in this truck.

My plans aren't involving NO2 or racing, i just want a nice mild 165 hp truck with a 302 and deep gears that this tranny offers.

My question is if I can get a bellhousing to fit a 302 on my 4cyl five speed?????? info is a little scarce on these units.

If not does anyone have any other good (read "cheap") ideas??

you can but you'll tear up your trans in a minute. it won't take the torque
some more needed info would be better as in what type of trans we talking about.

what are the choices?? do you have LOA for these? identifing marks?

like I said, I don't want a racetruck, I don't even go fast but this 2.0 won't even go SLOW!!

You want a five speed for the Ranger....

T5 can be made to work, but if you don't want to move that shifter back to hug the mid-section of a bench seat (about 7" farther back than stock), then you will want to find a Tremec 3450 or 3550....or maybe you can get an F-150 Mazda tranny to work. The 4.9 i6 and 5.0L version will work and they shouldn't need too much "massaging" to fit under a Ranger, unlike say a ZF5 out of an HD Ford truck....

As far as what trans will work with the 302..... I don't know. But as far as the trans that came with the 80's Rangers, well there were 2 main choices. Most 4x2s got the very weak and leaky Mazda (with a label on the side of the trans like E87A-??). Then you had most of the 4x4s got the Mitsubishi unit (only this one had a bellhousing you could remove, and a label on the side of the trans like FM146).

If a bellhousing swap is what you are after, I know you can't do it with the Mazda trans (all 1 piece housing), but it may be possible with the Mitsubishi trans.

sweet

!THANX AL & G2
. that was the kind of answer I was lookin for
how to tell the two apart
the only problem with the t5 is that everyone likes to scoop them up so quick around here and it drives up the cost
where can I find a 3450 or a 3550 ??
cause for the price of a t5 i can almost buy a 4x4 5spd out of a f150 or something
as for that mitsu trany, didn't i read that there was a M5OD put in f150s?
is that the mitsu or the mazda???

Here is a kit for 5 speed mitsubishi to 302 conversion, about the third item down the page. Just a thought, you may want to talk to them.

The ranger has the M5OD-R1 and the F150 has the M5OD-R2, both are Mazda transmissions.

thats not a bad price dave but its also no longer available , maybe good to pick their brains

I looked today and sure enough I have the mazduh trans

how bout those 3450s and 3550s I've heard so much about?

It doesn't have to be bulletproof. As a matter of fact a more likely cantidate for this swap is a 3.8 v6 that came out of a 83 F100.
It was a fine motor with plenty of power and got 15mpg with a C6 and the hammer down in a full size truck!
it had a aluminum intake, aluminum heads, carb, dura spark 2

I seem to remember seein somewhere that a 302 goes about 400 and something?

thinkin the aluminum heads, intake and some headers would shave this motor to 3?? remember that its two less cylinders of block and heads.

probly be nice since I don't have power steering!!!

Is the old 3.8 and the cougar 3.8 the same thing???

you know it's time to do something when my honda feels quick after drivin the ranger !!

dont waste your time using your stock tranny it wont last 5 minutes.....period and as far as a 3.8 I wouldnt waste my time doin that either. check the forums about your swap I have a 91 ranger 4x4 with a 5.0ho efi that has been a daily driver since 97.

efi my eye

I love efi! great milage, smooth running, easy starting, SOME STUPID LITTLE THING HOSING UP A PERFECTLY GOOD CAR OR TRUCK. NO WAY EFI!!!!
I know that it's better and all but I still like my carbs.

take a look at any stripped down carb engine compartment and then look under the hood of a 91 cougar WITH THE SAME SIZE MOTOR!!

NO! EFI IS NOT DEAD SEXY!!!
Like I said, Idon't want a powerhouse, just a little torque.
and I thinkk that the 3.8 is to the 302 what the 4.3 is to the 350
My friend has a S-10 with a 4.3 and its got plenty of power. I like hotrods to but this doesn't need to be one. I'll leave that to my datsun.

I don't think I would really consider the 3.8 as a viable candidate for a swap. It's a fairly bulky engine and you'd have to do almost as much work to stuff it into the Ranger's engine compartment as you would a 302/5.0. If you want to stay with a V6, why not swap in a 4.0 out of a later model Ranger? It's a straight bolt in swap, although you would have to put up with that dratted EFI...! If you decide to go with the V8 swap and you DO manage to find a T5, you can get the tailshaft and housing from an S-10 to move the shifter forward. Here's a link to a picture of the two:

http://www.mercuranger.com/images/short-shaft.JPG

This is an excellent site with a ton of information about the swap. Here's the homepage:

Good luck, and whatever you decide to do, have fun with it! -TD
