98 Ranger roof leak! help!!

ok, i got a leak coming in thru the roof. water comes past ceiling paneling at passenger corner. between cloth panel and plastic trim near corner of back window! anyone have a similar leak?
drips on the right rear speaker behind the pass seat. i have a regular cab.

is there any sealer i can apply to the outside that looks good?
i have tried silicones but they look dirty and crappy after a while!

About the only place for it to leak that high up, is around the center mounted combo brake light/bed light, maybe the mounting screws are loose & just need snugging up.

Our 2002 had a leak over the back window, new window installed by the dealer (warranty) and alls good. I would also check for water in the high-mount brake light, might be a bad seal there.

I FOUND THE LEAK!!!!!!
i pulled out the ceiling lining and exposed the rear window on top. i see 3 nuts that hold the upper portion of window to cab. I tightened the nuts, then i poured water on top near light assy outside and water pushed thru to the inside between the metal and the rubber. it's near the center of window above the sliding portion of the window about 2 inches left of the middle nut. so i do have a seal problem with the window. now! how to fix? . i cant have the whole window replaced. i dont want to pull the whole window out. i dont want to put some unsightly sealer on the outside! what do i do??
i have to do something. maybe pull the window out a little and apply sealer?

anybody got any ideas??

HELP!!!!!!!!!

That sounds like a good way to start, pull it out a little and try a little silicon.

Question

I've got that same leak on my 94 Ranger. It belonged to my father-in-law who lives In Ventura, CA where it never rains and he always kept it garaged anyway. We got him a new truck and he passed this one on to me. While it doesn't rain much here in Bakersfield, when it does rain the water pours in through the back of the cab. My headliner is ruined. I haven't pulled it out to check the leak yet but I figured it was either around the rear window of the bed light. My truck has the sliding rear glass in it.

On another water subject - At some point my father-in-law had to have some work done on the truck and they had to pull the dash out. Ever since then water has leaked into the front floorboard whenever it rains or we wash the truck. He said that some sort of tray was left out beneath the front vent. Has anyone ever heard of such at thing? If so, how hard is it to put a tray back in there and where would I find such a tray?

Thanks,
Dale

Smile 98 ranger roof leak fixed

i was adventurous. i pulled all the trim away from the headliner and the rear wall of the cab. there are eight nuts that hold the rear window in. three on top, three on bottom, and one on each side. i took the rear window out, and found the problem. on the seal for the window, there was a section about six inches long that was not sticking to the body of the truck. there was dirt on it and underneath it where water had carried it in. a quick trip to auto zone and a roll of sealer (the strip kind that replaces what comes from the factory) and i was back in business. i just took all the old stripping off and replaced it with new. reinstalled the window, and made sure that the eight bolts were tight. since then, i have gone through two major rain storms here in middle tennessee, and not a drop of water has entered my truck.

I have this same problem with my 98 ranger. Now that it's freezing I have to scrape ice off the inside of my windows every morning and after i leave it sitting.

I tried sealing all around the back windows and the top break light with little improvement. I'd like to try the solution you came up with with replacing the seal. How do you get to those bolts without tearing up your headliner? Does it just pop out? I've never messed with any of that upholstry and I don't want to leave it all torn up.

edit: just found this pretty clear writeup on how to do it:
http://www.fordrangerforum.com/how-s...w-98-09-a.html

where can I get that seal roll stuff? What is it called?
