Can I keep the stock air filter with new Edelbrock 1406?

I'm getting a edelbrock 1406 carb on my 79 f150 and wanted to know if the stock air filter housing with the warm air intake tube will still fit and work with the new carb? I'm replacing the worn out 2150 carb and don't really want a big open air filter.

I think it will, but you may have to space it up a bit to clear the linkage.

You will have to space it up or get a good air filter box that will hold a decent size filter off a Dodge 440 (Motorhomes have dual snorkels) or some Chevy trucks with 454 engines. Make sure you set it up right with a warm air inlet so your carb won't ice in cool humid weather. Don't use one of those open "trailer queen" air filters that suck in hot air from under the hood.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I don't want one of those "trailer queen" air filters as you call them. The winters can be pretty cold here so I want to keep the stock air filter box with the warm air inlet.

As far as spacing it up to clear linkage, I'm keeping the EGR so I bought an EGR plate (EDL-8053) that goes between the manifold and the carb. I think this is 1" high. Will this be enough height to still use the stock air filter box ?

You will need 3/4" to 1" round spacer between the carb and air cleaner. I put a Edelbrock 1405 on my '73 390 and needed a 3/4" spacer to clear the fuel line.

Holley makes the proper air cleaner spacer that is cut out for the choke linkage for a Holley carb, but it will work on an Edelbrock too. I use one on my 1407.

Thanks, I found a 1" high, 5 1/8 diameter Mr. Gasket air cleaner spacer at Advanced Auto for $6 that should work.
