Never had one on my hat
I have, however, had a few beer bottle lids crimped over the edge of it.
I think it's to represent what beer you like ?!?

It was popular when I was in highschool among those of us who were into fishing (although I never wore one). Just a way to show your love of fishing I guess.

Don't try flying with the hook still on your hat. I've known people that were made to throw them away by airport security at the metal detector.

I had a hook in my hat, however the hat didn't come that way. A LONG time ago, a friend and I decided while we were out fishing to see if we could get too drunk to fish. I casted and snagged my own hat off my head. Then it got worse. All I'm saying here is YOU CAN actually get too drunk too fish.....

It's a very cryptic secretive message isn't it?

Means you like or care about fishing, eh.

Carry over from flyfishing and its gear. Flyfishermen (and/or women) will stick their spare flys in their hats/vests/etc to keep them dry or dry them out.

It's another way for somebody somewhere to make an extra buck. All variety of pins, stickers, badges, etc. are sold in hopes someone will identify with them and have to have one to adorn their hat with.

Stick a feather in his cap.

Is there a secret meaning in fishing fly circles? Like if the hook points up you're gay, and down you're straight? A red fly means you're married, and white you're single?

You have far too much time to contemplate.
