Question about the blocks used in 5.4 triton

Hello

My name is Warren and I come from Aust

As you would know we use the 5.4 VCT 3 valve engine in our Falcon road car.

This engine used an updated block that is meant to be stronger and used a different oil pan.

FPV also use a 5.4 block but fit cobra 4 valve heads. A question commonly asked in Aust is why the FPV motor doesn't have VCT?

One suggestion is that this is due to the oil passageways in the cylinder block. The quad cam motors are based on the original modular design, whereas Barra220 (triton sohc vct) is an updated design. This is the first time I have heard that the Tritons update block has extra oil passageways to allow VCT to be used.

I would have thought that this was a head issue. Can anyone help with information?

I believe that he is refering to the differences between the 04 blocks and the 03-earlier blocks. They get more powerful cars in the land down under!!

I know that the block has more ribbing and reinforcements. I am not sure in the oiling issues though. They also use longer piston skirts than the others did.

Sounds like he also wanted to find out if the Aussie -03 4V block could have had the -04 VCT technology....
Got me...

Thanks for the help.

Basically you have answered what I wanted to know. The difference between 03 and 04 5.4 block.

In Australia, Ford Performance Vehicles take the 5.4 block and stick Cobra R 4v heads on it. In rough figures this engine produces 400hp and 520nm of torque.

When they did this they ended up with two motors in the ford model line up, one utilizing VCT technology of the 3v Titon unit and a non VCT engine based on the Cobra 4 v heads.

What followed was a **** fight over the future of the FPV engine which in Australia is called the “Boss” engine. This is a marketing ploy to stick it to Holden (GM) and their use of the LS1.
These fights erupted on BBs through out Australia. We were told stroking was out and boring was out so where would future power upgrades come from? Supercharger applications were one way but what about NA routes?

Well the simple point was obvious, if the 5.4 3 valve can use VCT why can't we stick VCT on the Boss engine. In Australia we make a straight six for the Falcon. FPV have a V8 assembly line where the Boss engines are made, but as yet there hasn't been any attempt to re engineer your engine. What they did was scrounge through the FORD US parts bit and constructed their own engine on your parts. It’s a very powerful high performance engine, so successful infact that Ford US have and are looking into importing the engine back to the US for applications on American soil.

I hope that makes things a bit clearer. Sorry for creating confusion.
