As a sidenote, whenever you are still under the ONP you can have the service done as many times as you want. If you had it done at 50K miles, I would take it in and have it done AGAIN at 70K. That way you are getting new parts again and hopefully BETTER ENGINEERED parts since some time has passed. It pays to stay on top of how these programs work.

reply to the gent asking if the problem had been fixed on the 2002 explorers .... tne answer is no. Mine is getting fixed as we speak

see Ford TSB 02-8-01 for details on this one. As you can see the TSB (on the chain tensioner problem) includes the 2002 model year

Hey I have a 2001 4.0 SOHC in a ranger edge 4x4.. I noticed the noise you guys have been describing immediately after I bought the truck brand new.. took it back to the dealer and they couldnt find anything wrong so I've dealt with it for 44,000 miles now! Warranty is over..Ok so what is with the recall? Shouldnt Ford have notified me of any recalls for my vehicle? If so I didnt recieve that info..so what can I or should I do? any advice would be appreciated..

Just go to the dealer and tell them that you want to ONPs performed. Simple as that.

ONP = Owner Notification Program
Its basically a secret warranty that will only repair your issue if you complain about it. In this case, the rattling in the engine. It is NOT a recall, hence the reason people didnt receive anything about it in the mail (if I recall correctly). Its a free service where they replace various engine components if you are within the limits of the ONP. The rattle is 72K before you are on your own. Get it done!

Here's a stupid question...

Why do they call it an Owner NOTIFICATION Program if no attempt is made to contact the owners because it's not a recall???

Got to love the irony that is corporate America...

It doesnt matter, both engines are the same. Id go to www.flatratetech.com and ask there. The Ford techs can provide you with the exact ONP texts.

the relavent TSB I refernced 02-8-01 does not mention the 2003 model year. The 2003's may have gotten the updated parts I had to get installed in mine after 96,000 kms
