Overhead Reset
#3
If you reset it every tank it will be way off. Most guys here reset every time, and they all complain how worthless the overhead is. Leave it alone and it will show your true average (thats why it says AVG MPG). Thats what I do and am rarely off more than a couple of tenths. Now obviously if you use a tank to tow your 12000 lb trailer, and hand calculate your mileage it will be way off. But if you include that towing tank in with the rest of your tanks, then it will be correct.

Well, I care. It will easily show a trend without necessarily having a performance decrease. I had that exact situation happen to my Lincoln. Over about a 2 week period my avg went down about 1.5 mpg. It had over a 100k on it so I decided to change the plugs and wires. Within a week my average was back up to normal. All that without any noticeable performance change. Oh well to each his own, thats why they make them resettable, so both you and I can choose how we want to keep track of it.

The only way it'd be accurate if you never reset is if you calculated total gallons used since new or last rest agains the total mileage for the same. Useless info for me. I want to know what I'm getting on that tank.
It can be reset while the truck is started too, BTW. My overhead optimist tends to be about 1-1.5mpg high so I just look at it for trends.
