2022 F250, 21K miles. Took it in for a oil change. They said I need a new airfilter @ 179.99. I looked them up and they are like 20.00 +/- . Am I missing something, are they hard to install ?

That is freaking outrageous.
They should be ashamed of themselves to charge that.
Wow what a scam. Obviously they had to open it up for inspection. They are trying to charge you labor for something they have already done. It would be nothing to just drop a new filter in. Dealers Greed. Selling the truck is just the beginning. Servicing the vehicle is where the money is made with building good customer relationships for a lifetime of business with you and all the customers you send their way. Customers are your best salespeople.

It should be illustrated in the owners manual. Its reasons like this that they can charge so much, most people don't care these days "drop it off and fix it" is the new wave lol.
The owner's manual is written by lawyers, not engineers. Nothing in there is gospel, only wishful thinking. If your filter is dirty, change it. I live on dusty dirt roads.

Not necessarily. It is common for service writers to recommend services just based on mileage, or the day of the week, without ever looking at the vehicle.

Where can you get air filters for $20 ?? I think the last Motorcraft air filter for my Power Stroke was something like $80, and gas engines were around $60.

If that is what they are doing in shops nowadays it is scandalous. A $179.99 recommendation for an air filter based on mileage is not right. I have had filters go 60,000 miles and some at 20,000 or less. It all depends on the conditions and where you operate your vehicle. So just because you have 60,000 miles you need brakes? Geez. Sure glad I do my own service etc. Do not need any shop assuming I need anything. It is either wore out or it is not.
I ordered a genuine Motorcraft filter for my F250 6.7 on Amazon about 3 weeks ago and it was $39. Plenty of good YouTube videos on how to install it. Same for the fuel filters (which cost more than the air filter).

What year is your PSD? The 2017-2019 use the larger round filter, cheapest I can find it is at rock auto, like $45-48 for a reasonable brand. I went with the Hastings/Baldwin option myself. Better than the $70 auto zoo is looking for it. The 2020+ have a smaller, cheaper panel filter.
While air filters are part of the disposable economy I am all for, I won't do a Doc's or amazon special. Rather have the reputable brand for a few bucks more.
