You see these alot on rail work and oilfield trucks so they have a front platform to work off of. Alot of times there will be equipment, such as a large vise, pipe bender, etc. attached to it.
It really surprises me the number of people that own these trucks and don't realize they're used for actual work...

I have seen those on brush trucks. You’ll usually see some sort of gas engine driven pump, a heavy winch, or other fire fighting equipment mounted on the extended bumper.
