Pete Rose In Hall Of Fame??
I have always felt he should have been inducted to the Baseball hall of fame.
I couldn''t care less what team he gambled on.
No one game can be won by a single player especially guy who was known for just "getting on base".
It takes a TEAM to win or lose, and i'm sure the whole team couldn't throw a game so he would receive monetary benefit.
The Baseball Hall of Fame is more about what he did ON the field.
So what if he bet on baseball games.
The gambling is done by many sports players.
Give him his due!

Pete Rose In Hall Of Fame??
Same here, he belongs. End of sentence.
It seems that the only one with a h**don against him is baseball itself. I say put him on the ballet and see who votes for him. We've got "athletes" (and I use the term loosely) that have done a lot less for the game that people look up to every day. And I guarantee they aint as pure as the driven snow. Like him or hate him, Pete woulda played for free and still played just as hard. He gave his heart and soul to baseball. It's time he was recognized for that and not for getting caught betting on the sport he loved so much.

Ditto - I've always thought he should be allowed in.
Also, what's some unproven gambling compared to convicted druggies, wife beaters and the like being allowed to make millions and be the center focus on TV for all of our kids to see as "made-up hero's" on a daily basis. I'ts thrilled me not to have to hear or see Strawberry anymore. Guess the media and owners figured 5+ infractions of the law was enough.
Let a true champion sports have his glory.
Just my opinion. Carlene

Pete Rose In Hall Of Fame??
I'm with you hotwhlz, with one small exception. I am not sure Pete would have played for free. He would have probably become a top producing aluminum siding contractor and the star of the softball team, but Rose always needed cash for "the flashier" things in life.
He does, however belong in the hall.

Pete Rose In Hall Of Fame??
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Jul-02 AT 09:17 AM (EST)]I have to disagree. I say keep him out. I also have to comment on Mil1ion's TEAM statement. I strongly believe that one player CAN have an impact on a game's outcome. A team is a group of players striving to reach a common goal, to win. If one member is sidetracked by individual goals, monetary benefits, or whatever, the team suffers. The old saying that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link certainly rings true in the world of sports.

Pete Rose In Hall Of Fame??
I do agree he is (was) one of the greatest baseball players. But why do most think the rules should be changed for him?
He knew the rules. He broke them. He must live with the consequences of his actions like everyone else in life. End of story.
We all make choices everyday that can affect our future...

Pete Rose In Hall Of Fame??
I watched Rose play the game as a Phillies fan, and nobody played harder or gave more effort on the field.
However, I believe he should not be allowed in the hall.
As far as "unproven gambling charges" are concerned, Rose signed a paper admitting he gambled on baseball. Check out the facts.
And of course one player can affect the outcome of a team game. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous.
I'm not taking up for the druggies and other players who are into criminal activities off the field, but gambling on a sport while you are actively playing that sport is unacceptable, IMHO.

He signed an affadavit or whatever it is called, stating that he was a gambler. That he bet on football, horse and basketball. He was never convictednor admitted to betting on baseball. Pete went to jail for tax evasion from his gambling winnings.
The only reason baseball was ever brought into the issue was so that the steroid boy who testified against Pete; would get a lesser conviction for all of his drug trafficking charges.

He belongs in for his accomplishments as a player. He holds the record for hits and that is that.
As far as one player not having an effect on a baseball game I think Dennis is totally wrong.Look at Randy Johnson,Pedro Martinez,Jason Giambi,Griffey Jr(when he was in Seattle)among others. All it takes is messing up one throw,or swinging at the wrong pitch, trying to steal at the wrong time to screw up a potentially big scoring opportunity,or to help the other team.
Rose is not banned for gambling as a player,it's as a manager. He can set the lineup. The manager can remove a pitcher, put in the wrong pitcher, pinch hit,or not pinch hit as well as many other things that can directly affect the immediate situation at hand.In that case he could actually determine the outcome of a game to win his bet or to save his butt in the event of large debts.
Not saying he did, just that that's the thought process that's keeping him out.
