Moving to NH vs VT
Hey folks,
We're looking to retire from the military and buy a place either in VT or NH and I wanted to get some local input from, who else, Ford truck fans. I know all about the taxes- and not loosing 8% of our dual military retirement pay is very tempting. So is no sales tax. Heck my cousin lives in VT and says they drive across the border for big purchases just to avoid the sales tax. VT has more overall taxes (pay, sales, but a little less real estate), but no billboards and a little more rural-ness.
We think we'll fit in with either side. We're not religious. Politics- wife is left of center, I'm right of center, but I think I'm more libertarian than anything- the less the government has a say, the better. And that's from a career military officer!
Next up is schools- we'll have an 6th and 8th grader and plan to stay put until they're both in college. So the better the schools, the better for us.
Plan to work from home, or start a small business to stay busy. I can be happy putting around in the garage working on stuff full time.
However, how is life in general?
I should post the same question in the VT section and see what they say.

Howdy zimm...thanks for your service. Although I don't live in either VT or NH...I do know folks who do. I can't speak for the school systems in any areas...but...I can speak to the subject of taxes. While NH doesn't have sales or income taxes...property taxes are very high compared to VT and MA. Afterall...you have to pay for running the state somehow. I'm sure you can find a place you'll love in either state. Good luck.
