New to me 86 short bed

I was looking for a 73-79 but found this instead

It was a southern truck. 93k miles. Bed and cab are perfect. The front fender has a little rust in front of the tire. I also think the cat is plugged. It sounds really muffled when it’s idling and when your driving it sounds smooth but the power is held back. I also believe it’s original paint

Do what you think you need to do with the cat converter, and then with not much fuel in the tank, pour a whole can of seafoam in the tank and then start driving it. Sitting around all the time, and with the ehtanol fuel it probably has in it, the fuel system can get plugged up with gunk.

Once you drive it for awhile, I would get under the truck and change the fuel filter. This is not very much fun. I see yours has dual tanks. There should be a switching valve mounted on the frame, and it should look round on the bottom. Take some large pliers or a strap wrench and try to unscrew the round part. On mine I had to unplug the lines and take the whole assembly out and put it in a vise to get it loose. Inside that round part is usually a filter. Some trucks had it, some didn't, but you need to check it.

The switching assembly on your truck looks like this. Ford calls it the fuel reservoir.

I will definitely do that. I’ve had those apart before and think I actually have a new filter in the garage. The reservoir on my 87 when bad and would return fuel to my front tank and overfill it. I will also add the sea foam that you described. Thanks for the insight.

Seafoam or Berryman B-12. The berryman is what I give all my cars once a year, before Winter.

Just realized I posted the same thing twice and I can’t figure out how to delete this one. 😂

Great buy! My ‘86 5.0 AOD truck was almost identical to yours when I bought it in the late 90’s. Mine was rust free but I didn’t like the light tan on the dark blue so it got a respray. My tank selector failed and would over fill the front tank also. I tried the cleaning thing but it wouldn’t work so I had to replace it. Mine isn’t a daily driver so I only run 100% 93 octane.

I got tired of the blue after thirty-five years. Always wanted gray.
