Popping Sound from Driver Front Suspension During Right Turns

Truck is *just* outside warranty at 38K miles and this started just this weekend.

Reproduce:
  • Make a low speed, tight right turn into/out of a drive way

Expected:
  • No popping noises from driver's front suspension area
Result:
  • Popping noises from driver's front suspension area
I usually associate these sounds with a dying CV joint but haven't climbed under the truck to get a good look. I'm also fuzzy on whether we even have CV joints on a solid front axle 4WD truck.

Anyone else have this issue?

Make sure hubs are in the auto position and also the ujoint does have a grease zerk.
i usually try and give them a shot of grease when I change oil.

Yep, forgot to mention that hubs are in auto.

I bet the ujoints need grease - the dealer always says they took care of greasing them at every oil change but I've never seen the work on an invoice.

I'll have to get the parts for this and do it myself. Thanks for reminding me!

My 1st guess would be the front sway bar end links. I had the same symptoms when mine went out on my ‘00 F-250.

Caster shims can also pop. Probably not the issue, but something to look at.

If it’s easily to reproduce, turn off the stabilitrac and try again. (foot on brake and hold down the traction control button for 3 sec). My 2016 would make noises in certain turns in my daily route that was just the truck reacting to weird conditions.

If its popping on full lock turns, or maybe just shy of, check the bushings on the steering stabilizer. The bushing on my 2020 with about 20k on it came out of the eyelet of the stabilizer and would bind on the steering linkage.

Bummer - thanks for the info. I'll have these checked out also.

Interesting - I'll try this. Thank you!

Sway bar end links are probably the cheapest and easiest solutions if that turns out to be your problem. I picked up a set from O'Reilly's with a lifetime warranty and replaces them once more while I had the truck.

Easy enough to check too. Just disconnect the ends and tie them up out of the way. If the sound goes away when you drive you've located the problem. Mine was 4x2 so I don't really know if it is as easy on a 4x4. Didin't crawl under to look...

I have this poping sound

I am suspecting the track bar bolt at the track bar mount or the bolts that secure the mount to the frame.

when I tighten the track bar bolt and the two bolts I can get to on the mount, the sound gets duller leading me to believe I am getting close.

these bolts and nut plates are one time use and I broke that rule when I installed my lift kit.

plan is to order new bolt and nut for track bar on mount end, and the 5 bolts and nut plates that secure the track bar bracket to the frame.

I do not think its the bolt at the pax end of the track bar since the sound seems to be on the drivers side.

I may have cuased my own problem with the track bar relocation bracket I installed...and maaybe a very thin washer is needed in between the track bar mount and one side of the rod end link.

keep us updated on the progress.....

Yeah there are enough suggestions here to allow me to just toss the truck at my mechanic and let him figure it out.

Gonna be a few weeks before I can get in, though - I'll keep this thread updated.

Don't worry about it, probably nothing.
