Lightbulb 460 stock rebuild costs

If anyone is interested here is a spreadsheet I put together for my own use for the costs of parts for a full engine rebuild/refresh of a 460 fuel injected that may be useful to some of you at some point.

The data is quite useful. What were your machining costs for freshening up the block and heads?

Not a 460, but I put together an invoice for an FE engine I just finished for a guy.

Machine work and head job came to $1340.
Resized rods/bushings, valve and guide job, grind crank, bore/deck block, and grind crank.

$250 for balance.

$770 for all parts minus a cam and set of lifters I saved from another rebuild a year ago.

$2360 is what parts/machining came to. I continue to lose my butt on labor....don't know why I keep doing these......

The key to that is to do all if the labor you can yourself. I found an engine for sale that had the heads already done, block tanked and honed, tolerances checked -everything was within tolerances, for $500, as it had been rebuilt before. So all I have to do is buy the parts and put it together. Total cost will be under 1k. Not that you will find that exact deal but if you can avoid the machine shop, (except for the heads) you can do a decent rebuild for cheap.

The total bill from the engine shop for labor plus shop-supplied parts -- pistons, rings, bearings, timing set, oil pump, cam, lifters, valve springs, gasket set, harmonic balancer, hard/soft plugs - is just a few bucks shy of $3000 ($2998.43). I'll get the final itemized bill on Monday... Yes, I could have gotten a stock remanufactured engine for a few bucks less, but this build has a few upgraded items over 'stock'...

Added to this nearly 3-grand for the engine rebuild itself are the parts for the mass-air conversion (wiring harnesses, ECU, crankshaft 'cookie cutter', timing cover, air filter box/mass-air sensor/intake tubes, crank position sensor) Then add headers and new cat-back exhaust. Oh, and don't forget the new water pump, radiator, and the other 'miscellaneous items'.. All together this stuff added another $2-grand-ish...
