Try to let it go past and move it CCW, if it's a Ford distributor the rotor should end up on number 1 plug wire and right over the 1 of the 12127 in the distributor casting number with the vacuum can nipple pointed straight out. I set mine at 10 degrees for initial start. Depending on engine there will be a chisel mark on block or manifold and twin mark on distributor. That's where set at factory. Take a break sometimes works good. A good tool to have is a old distributor shaft to turn oil pump shaft a bit. You can do the same with thin wall long socket, if you do be sure to tape it to your extension.
