Saginaw Power Steering Pump in a Highboy - worth it?
#16
I know this post was awhile ago but I am going through the same exact thing. Have everything to do this to my 77 Highboy but cannot get the adapter to fit on the Pump to the Control Valve hose. I saw you flared your (high pressure) line from the control valve to the Pump. I did not think of that, have spent a week looking for adapters with no luck. Did you use a Brake Line Flare tool or is that a whole different flare tool. I have the hose from WH's that fits the pump but the other side of the hose (fitting) will not fit my Control valve hose.
Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks mbeards, I am pretty sure I understand. I just couldn't believe I can't find adapter or anyone to make a hose/line for me. But what you did makes sense! Appreciate the Response. I will look into flaring or having someone do it for me. I may just do the WHOLE Steering upgrade and then connect to the new box, I have all the stuff to do it. Just not the time (lol).

One of these days I might upgrade my PS.
Not sure if my ball joints are freezing up of it the old power assist is really the POS its always been.
I will never understand why Ford refused to use real power steering instead of the lethargic power assist that they used for soo many years.
Same goes for the divorced transfer case.

I can and have dealt with the power assist for 30+ years. Yes it sucks and leaks but you get used too it (LOL). My son is starting to want to take it to school and I do not feel safe letting him drive it with the slop in the steering and 20 point turns in the parking lot. I am the second owner and have had it since 1984, I should have bit the bullet or installed the upgraded Power steering years ago.
I just recently sent the Ram Cylinder to Blue-top to rebuild so that is $500.00 I wont get back when I upgrade. I will try to sell it but will not get much back on it.
I do not mind the Divorced Transfer Case that much, only rebuilt it once in 30 years so thats not bad. Figure the price of trucks now I may as well start dumping $$ in besides wheels/tires/Paint and general Maintenance

$500 to have someone install seals in the hydraulic steering cylinder ? These are very basic and not rocket science.
I have a complete Power Assist (Bendix) unit from a 1956 Chevy Nomad wagon which I am very tempted to graft into a 1956 ****** wagon I recently trailered home. In my opinion, when they are rebuilt carefully, they work like a charm.
I think of the Bendix units as a miniature Rock-Ram. hahahaha
For Power Steering on my '77 F-350, which was originally a 2wd, I chucked the PS box and mounted a $40 Ford Corp PS box out of a 2wd 1993 Ford F150 with a removable frame bracket I made from scraps. It has been on my pickup since 1998, and allowed me to change to Cross over steering on a Dana 60 king pin front disc brake axle assembly from a '79 Ford.
Because of the change from TTB to '76 high-boy leaf springs, I wound up installing a Pan-Hard Rod sourced from a full size Bronco around ;78 year model. The panhard rod squelched any Death-wobbles from hitting unseen pot holes.
Above photo shows my home-built mounting bracket to accept a 1993 Ford Corp. PS box.
The Ford Corp box I found on a 1993 F150 2-wheel drive pickup for Cheap $40.00 us $$$.
And for the pan-hard rod, was around $25.00 which came from a '78 full size Ford Bronco donor.
I cannot see any reason to spend big $$$$ on purchase a supposed "refurb" PS box for $500-plus. Just me.
Keep moving forward !

The Bendix Steering Cylinder you could not work on unscrew and repair. I am guessing they cut them and reweld them???? Not sure. I have seen other Cylinders from hydraulics/tractors/etc that were easily accessible for rebuilding. Yes I thought the price was insane but got tired of my driveway getting covered with power steering fluid (lol). I have everything to do the 1978-79 conversion, have had it for years. Just was not a priority before. My son wants to drive it and of course, we baby these kids now a days! I bought the truck in 1984 when I was 17 and drove it like that since!
Nice job on the Cross Over! I thought of that as well but do not know enough about it....

I bet there’s some cheap $150 Chinese maid tractor cylinder out there that would do the job. But the original Bendix in Garrison cylinders can also be rebuilt by a competent hydraulic shop I took mine to a relatively local tractor shop and they sent it out to some other shop in West Virginia and they cut it open and made it right for much less that I would’ve spent for a reman or having sent it to somewhere like LARES.
