AGM batteries the way to go
#76
I just bought a set of Odyessey Extremes group 65 after doing a lot of research. I have the factory batteries in a 2017 and drivers side was starting to get weak, the drivers side is the only one that leaked and has eaten away at the hold down. Also the positive side terminal is just corroded and I have cleaned it maybe 6 different times now didn't matter even caking it in preventive corrosion spray it just kept happening. Seem like this is common and a serious problem in this year truck. Got them at Auto Zone special order $330 each.
Having built custom battery cables for many years and most of my customers came to me with corrosion problems. The corrosion takes place inside the cable. In my builds I do not use auto grade calling, instead, I use welding cable. You can carry far more amps on welding grade for the same ga as you can on auto-grade. Secondly is the flexibility of welding grape, its a bundle of very thin copper wires. Lot of the cheap auto cables are just copper plated steel and the vibration and bending are the roots of corrosion.
Here is a custom set I built for a client. Every component I use is 100% copper, some is silver, tin or lead plated, this help with any corrosion.
NOT here to sell, just posted to inform. You can build your own just as easily as I can. Stop by any large welding supply and they carry the cable and you get the solid copper connections from them or online, brass can also work.

Keep in mind that the Interstate AGM MTX-65 shown above has a CCA of 750
The Motorcraft flooded wet cell BXT-65 at dealer has a CCA of 850.
The Odyssey Extreme TPPL AGM ODX-65 has a CCA of 950.

The OEM Motorcraft batteries in my truck were 750cca. I also have two of them to spin over my 6.2L, so more than enough. Looks like KU4OJ has a 7.3L gas on the way, so I wouldn't worry about a 750cca in it either. Sure, more is better though. Maybe his will have two as well...

........... Northstars have brass posts, but Odyssey Extremes go two better, with tin plated brass terminals for even greater corrosion protection, as well as more elevated posts (since 2012) to gain full circumferential face contact with newer style Ford battery cable clamps.
Odyssey Extreme 65-PC1750

There has been a recent change to the terminal design on the Odyssey battery. I just picked up two ODX-AGM65 (formerly 65-PC1750) batteries. Upon removing the terminal caps I noticed the posts appeared to be non-tin plated brass, looking more or less identical to the Northstar and X2 terminals. I reached out to Odyssey who then informed me that all the Extreme models will eventually have the non-plated brass. They haven't changed the description yet for the ODX-AGM65, instead waiting till all models have made the change over.

The production Motorcraft batteries are different than the service Motorcraft batteries at dealer.
This has been the case for as far back as I can remember... (since Ford first began using the Group 65 size)... and is also something to keep in mind when repurchasing the Motorcraft brand battery at the dealer, with the expectation that it will perform just the same as the Motorcraft battery installed in production.
The dealership / wax & oil retailer Motorcraft battery will be different than the production battery, in ways that may be both better, and worse.
Neither are nearly as good as a quality AGM battery, for reasons that a wet cell, even a maintenance free wet cell, can never compete with physically.
