Retro rusty or repaint
#16
Now that I am on my PC and can see the picture the stripes are not that hard to lay down.
Once all the body work is done I would paint the yellow down the sides then tape it off to keep the yellow the way you want it and spray the brown.
I was thinking of doing the little pin stripe around the out side like yours it paint. Then was thinking 2 pin strips of different size.
Then no pin stripes and use different colors & lines decal pin stripes. In the end after 4 years of rebuilding I wanted to get it done and it got no pin strips.
Almost ready for paint
White put down
Red put on the cab.
Rear fenders tapped up and the red just put on
Even with out the pin stripe decal the factory had it looks pretty good
You have a better truck to start with than I did
Done in my un-insulated no heat or AC garage cab off frame rebuild hope it gives others the kick to get going on their project.

ps I bought the truck to take trash to the dump weekly.
It takes longer to talk about the truck than it does to dump the trash

About a decade ago I sold my silver 77 F250 4x2. Gas was ~$5 / gal, and I was averaging about 1K miles / year, so it sat by the curb more than anything else. When I bought it from the original owner in the late 90's, it had a square-ish camper shell on it with the fake wood paneling inside, black painted bumpers with a push bar in front, black steel wheels and the awful multi-color stripes on the sides. The interior though, was surprisingly cool, yes A/C, with the black carpeting, black and silver seat covers and door panels and the red-striped dash panels. It even had cruise control. I proceeded to remove the stripes, chrome the bumpers, filled in the old mirror mounts holes and parking lights. I named it HiHo, which had dbl meaning. I recall being in a gas station with my new HTM SR24 (powerboat) shining on a tandem axle trailer attached. A few kids on BMX bikes that were riding by, slowed to say "nice truck".. I proceeded to repaint it silver. End result is below. As I mentioned, I ended up regretfully selling it, years later finding out about the FW package. Now, if I had to do it all over again, I would actually do it over the same.
Yet, in regards to your truck, I am inclined to suggest that you leave it as is, after the addressing and safety and mechanical issues. I expect that you will get more enjoyment and use out of it with its dings, scratches, and surface rust than you would with it as a garage queen. just my $.02.

Some guys use these trucks as their daily drivers, some use them every so often to haul junk and some guys consider these projects and want to re-do, repair and restore them. What category do you fall into? Your truck is pretty rare as far as Dentsides go but that also means a fair amount of money and time that you can never re-coup if you bring it back to it's glory days. If you feel you will keep this truck for many years and it gives you time with your Son then you can't put a price on that no matter the direction you take. Sometimes these cars/trucks are in too good of condition or too rare to not bring them to original and are often re-sold because the owner didn't want to embark on such an endeavor to make it like it was. If you do the restore/repaint route, that groovy paint scheme may be a little over the top for your Son when he gets his license!
If it were me.......repaint it a color you and your son both like and use Maicco to keep it on the thrift at not show car expensive, Chisel away at the worn out stuff and enjoy the truck. You most likely won't sell it so it doesn't matter that its a Free wheelin edition.
