Lightbulb Why Does Ford Ohc engine Put out Low end Torque and the competition "Pushrod" revs

Hey Sorry If im putting to much posts, but Im Young(18) and just have alot of questions to ask you experinced guys out there. I go and look at the 2v 5.4 v-8 spec (wish i had one instead of 4.6)and relize it makes its peak torque at 2,000 rpm which is more than GM's v8 and in a way better rpm range than the Hemi.I also know that ford v8s are modular which in that family uses the OHC design. I know that design advantages are low valve train weight which should help it have highspeed rpm horsepower like the competiton. But Chevy and Dodge engines use push rods and make ton of high rpm horse power. So I ask, Isnt it supposed to be the other way around, Ford engines that use ohc should "rev" like the competition and Chevy and Dodges pushrods should have tons of low end torque like the 2v,3v,and 4v 5.4s and the 6.8l v10. Im not Bashing anyone engine Because there are all great engine but all have there share of problems to. I know Ford has the lowest Horepower rating but when you drive a ford you can use all that power in a sane rpm range with out blowing up your engine or getting less than stellar 8-9mpg. Me and my friends look at the Big 3 trucks at it this Way, You Buy a Ford when you want A work horse that has tons of grunt, You Buy a Dodge Hemi when you want to show " riceBoys" That trucks Can play too and you buy a Chevy when you want an all around truck.

There are other things to consider too...like bore x stroke. The 5.4 has a longer stroke than the 4.6, that's where it gets the extra torque. The GM engines are pushrod motors, and it my opinion they make better truck engines because of that. But if they don't have the same stroke they may still not make as much torque. You have to take the entire engine design into consideration, not just the valvetrain.

My new OHC 4.0 makes 45 more horsepower than my '99 pushrod 4.0 had. However, torque is virtually identical. Odd, huh? There's lots to think about when it comes to which engine is best suited for trucks.

How does the pushrod engine make a better work engine?

not all around

Well as far as mod's not reving & producing horse power well that
is not so. Out of all of the engines i have owned the mods have
been some of the most well rounded engines that i have seen.
My current lincoln contintal 32valve intech is in my opinion has a
flat horsepower & torque curve this is the one that is tuned down
to 270hp & 300lbsft of torque also at 9.0.1 compression where
the exact same block & more or less heads on the cobra @10.0.1
compression now this mod motor is a very high reving engine you can slap off 6500rpm shifts as often as you like & does decent on gas mielage @17.8 to 18.1 in town & 28.0 to 30.0 on the highway mind you this is in a 5761lbs gvw car that is more gvw than most small & mid sized suv's. As for the larger mod motors like my 5.4 eddie bauer expedition after all of the mods i have had done to it it too pull's like a freight train i make a lot of trips in this one & as far as passing power on the road it is more than plenty.Holding the cruise ctl @ 90 mph a 350 mile trip goes by pretty quick on a full tank 32gallons or so trip minder will show 460 miles to empty i
normaly see 18.0 mpg in town on the high way @ 70mph i can see
as high as 20.1 to 21.0 mpg now my expy is not a 4x4 & has 3.71
gears. Never seen a sub or envoy pass me while i was holding at
90mph now some times they try to keep up but that dose not
hold up for long.
have you driven a ford lately?

at least I'm not the only one who thinks OHC engines make power in the higher RPM range! Caming in all the engines have something to do with it too.

Hey, The Way I think the OhC has A Higher HorsePower Advatange is ; Since you have a 30% less vavle train weight
the engine valvetrain can be ran at higher rpms stable.Dont get me wrong, Pushrods design can be stable but its the valve train weight. If you can show me the error of my opinion please explain to me. I rather learn somthing new than not learn anything about my beloved ford engine

You are not wrong. OHC cam engines do offer the ability to rev higher. This doesn't mean that they have to or that there is no bottom end. Your engine doesn't really care how the valves get opened as long as they are opening fast enough, far enough, and at the right time. The less power it takes to do so the better.

OHC engines also usually have a more straight intake path since there is no pushrods in the way. Less weight in the reciprocating mass/weight also allows the engine to rev faster and easier.

i think it all has to do with the set of up the cams and it does take higer RPMs to make more power. i know my 300 makes its peak torque at 2G and the peak HP is about 3400 (prolly 36-800 now) but if it had the ability to wind out and breath it'll make th same numbers as the chevy inliner. that coupled with the longer stroke of the 5.4 is where it makes its torque. the valve train design doesnt really make much of a difference...after all the 302 can be wound out to 7G + to make its peak power...its all in how the motors set up. i also believe the OHC engines are smoother then the OHV engines and they wind up faster. i dunno if that helps any or not but thats my educated guess.

ya i did notice that also, not to knock any other message board but they do seem to be a little childish when u ask about other brands, tech specs, etc...like i said i hope i cleared up things a little.

My take on this is, it is the tune of the engine, intake runner lenght, cam timing, cam specs. Sure the other guys like to throw out unusable numbers, because people that don't know any better
think they have something.A pushrod engine doesnt make a better truck engine just because it has an ancient pushrods design. An ohc engine does what it does more effeciently than a pushrod engine. My truck with a V10 routinely beats GM trucks with supposidly more hp.While they are trying to reach their higher rpm range, my truck is using its low end trq to actually pull my truck along better.I have always wanted to see a 4.6 with a carb setup, built to see high rpm.You would have to use a crank trigger ign system, etc. It would be sweet. Its not that they cant rev, its just they dont have to.My V10 is a wonderful truck engine and i would hate to go back to push rod engines.I doupt you could get a V10 pushrod engine to achieve 16-16.5 mpg.

Gt 150 hey guy do you rember the article on the mod motor 5.4 &
4.6 area where someone came up with the brilliant idea of REPLACE THE MODULAR well i was stunned at the number of ford owners that seemed like they did not truely stand by their powerplant this was bothering to me a true ford fanatic will go to the grave usally keeping their mouth shut as i did during the course of this thread. I am usally stunned by the level of ignorance of some of what i call my own people [ford owners] . Case in point with awsome flat horse power & flat
torque curve is the new GT 5.4 supercharged monster ferrari slayer [aka] now in history when have you ever known of chevy
or dodge ever taking on a marque at the caliber of ferrari they
cannot even deal with current mustang as a matter of fact i belive
that they dropped the camaro & fire bird in true fear of being
embarresed by a 281 cid sc pony. Well as for dodge all of you may
want to look at consumer reports 10 best used car buy's. If dodge
wanabee's read these figures based on data all provided by the
manufactures [ford, chevy, dodge] they would not go near one
now all of us have to take a little bite of a bloody nose on this
one but hey this is why we are called fan's not replacer's. Wait till
svt keeps applying their magic to more projects as john colletti
once told me at a one on one if you think the push rod's were
something just wait we are going to make all pushrod's even the 5.0 302 seem like it was one of the flat heads now i am still waiting to get schooled on that one. Does anyone rember BOB GLIDDEN in a ford he came to be known as the winninges't pro stock driver ever in a ford.
have you driven a ford lately
