Slide in Camper

I have a 1970 F100 w/ 302/C6 trans Longbed. I have obtained a 1,000 lb. Slide in Camper. My question, will the truck handle it and what is the max load limit on this type truck? Thanks in advance.

It should be okay with 1,000 pounds. To know for sure, take it to a scale and weigh it so you know how much it weighs at each axle. Compare this with the GVWR tag.

I will check, but I believe the GVWR tag is gone. Shoots me in the right direction though. Thanks.

Seems to me a 1/2 ton truck should be able to handle a 1/2 ton payload without too much trouble. Or am I missing something here?

I'm still trying to understand the high tech remote camera system on the rear. That's one heck of reverse camera

LOL maybe the camera steers with the steering while backing. Even the new ones don't do that!

I had to build an apparatus to be able to lift the camper off the bricks it was laying on out on the farm. The guy then loaded it into his 4x4 and brought to my place. I have it on blocks now and the restoration will begin soon. I'm thinking of putting Firestone Ride Rite air shocks on or at least the air bag support that goes inside the coil spring to add stability to the springs. Has anyone tried either of these options. Thanks.

That was placed on there by the previous owner who used to live in it. He had solar power on the front and just put that camera there as a deterrent, it is fake.

If you do bags, plan on dual channels so you can adjust the PSI in each bag separately from the other.

I have Firestones Ride Rite on two rigs and Air Lift, LoadLifter 5000Ultimate on the F250. I didn't have a choice on the Firestones. Dad got the Firestones many years ago and I helped him put them on the stock truck. I've inherited the truck, but have seen no reason to change the bags out. The stock truck is manual fill dual channel. The F350 had them whe we bought it. I put wireless remote air on both the F250 and the F350.

If you decide to go that route, the bags themselves seem equal, all things considered. It's the mounts that I feel make the differentiation between the two. I feel Air Lift LoadLifter has much stronger and better mounts. As a side benefit the Air Lift 5000 Ultimate has an internal jounce that allows safe operation at zero PSI. The Firestones shouldn't be run without at least 5 PSI in them.
The Firestone mount on the F350 actually bent when a mounting bracket bolt sheered. I noticed it before we bought the pickup and used it as a bargaining chip. After we bought it I had to pull the lower bracket off, straighten it out, drill out a couple of the holes and put it back together. On these particular firestone mounts, while there are 4 bolt holes, they are off set slightly so you can only use two bolt holes at a time, unless you modify the bracket like I did and reinforce it with 4 bolts. Original bolts were class 5. New bolts and braket / axle bolts are all grade 8 now..
The AirLift Brackets are solid with no "legs" like the Firestones, which I consider to be a weakness in the design. Just food for thought....

2 piece Firestone bracket with missing bolt and bent leg.

Bracket with bend straightened out. New Grade 8 bolts and extra bolts added to reinforce the "legs".

LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate bracket. Solid, one piece mounting system.

AirLift Wireless air systerm. Works with AirLift and Firestone. Automatically maintains set pressure (as long as the ignition key is on) No getting out of truck in the snow and rain to manually air up the bags.

I have to ask, I installed my bags with individual inflation for each side. I placed the air chucks in the fuel door area seeing as I didn't go the wireless route. I set mine once on a trip and then once stopped at a gas station to air up. That was the only PITA because you have to remove the Fastgun but it was already off for fueling. Do you really need to have it controlled all the time? I set and forget and have comeback a week later and might have lost a psi per side. I wanted to go with onboard air but after using my set up, cant justify the expense. Just wondering how often you need to adjust yours
