Welcome to FTE. That is an unusual situation. The drive shaft is splined into the transmission and bolted to the rear axle via u bolts. So, I have to assume you are getting some spin in neutral.
I would take your question to the Explorer section and see if anyone else has had a similar problem.

If your driveshaft is turning and everything is bolted up properly to the rear axle, with the pinion turning etc. AND the vehicle does not move, then you have a broken rear axle, probably to the point where the whole thing needs replacing, case and all. It is possible to clean out a section of a ring gear, but you usually get terrific noise, clunking and worse. OR both your axles are broken.
