To add to the above: The problems with the 4.0 SOHC can lead to total loss. Guides and tensioners don't last forever in any engine, and forever comes up mighty quick in some of the 4.0 motors. To change tensioners and guides, you have to pull the motor, or pull the trans and work with mirrors under the back of the motor. The 4.0 SOHC has been called a "...hateful engine.." by a member after a rebuild.
That said, it seems any 4.0 SOHC will work to replace another. Front engine accessories, the entire intake and exhaust, and anything else with a wire or connection needs to stay with the vehicle, and the like items must be stripped from the donor.
IMO I would put guides and tensioners, if not the entire chain and sprocket setup, in any 4.0 I was going to transplant.
How is the rest of the truck?
Keep in mind the 5 speed automatics are a delicate flower as well.
If it's nice and he'll pay you to take it away, that would be an excellent deal. You may not do that well, but you will know when you're comfortable buying it with an engine and maybe transmission swap in mind.
Serving suggestion....ymmv.
Good luck!

Thank You. The truck itself is beautiful, leather. Mileage is slightly over 200K. Solid with No rust to speak of. The owner is still very enamored with it so, meh..I dunno. I am not above a transplant and perfectly capable of doing such.So...Yes, your suggestions and the costs associated with them are food for thought.
