Steering wheel shaft movement

The steering wheel (tilt) will move up down/side to side about 1/2",is there away to tighten or repair this and what does it consist of and does the wheel have to come off which will be an issue as the threaded holes for a puller are badly wallowed out,any help would be appreciated.

The wheel will certainly have to come off. Whether it's loose bolts or the pot metal housing inside is cracked, not sure. Steering columns are not fun to work on, a lot of complicated fiddly parts to deal with. I would hunt around the junkyard for a good one. You can change the whole thing out, or if you want to repair yours you will have a parts source.

This happens alot with lifted trucks. People use the steering wheel to boost themselves into the truck and break the pot metal column piece inside.

Is it just the steering wheel or the whole upper section of the column that's loose? Tilt columns have a couple of screws inside that eventually work loose and cause the whole upper section of the column to get loose and wobbly. You'll have to remove the steering wheel to access them and as I recall they have inverted torx heads.

Yes I have tilt wheel a problem I have now is the steering wheel bolt holes that you use a puller on are wallowed out and I can’t get a tap down into them because there’s not enough depth-any suggestions on removing the wheel other than a puller?

Drill them out to the next size and then tap them. Make sure you go buy a bottom tap to get as many threads as you can.

You can try loosing the nut but DO NOT REMOVE
grab the wheel left and right and pull 1 side then the other do same top and bottom and don't be gentle, most of the time they come off.

BTW if you do this with the nut off when the wheel pops you will be seeing the DDS!
